This time last year, I rebuilt both heads and replaced all belts and pulleys after one of the bolts behind the cam pulley vibrated its way into the cam pulley and did lots of damage... Fast forward to a couple of days ago, the wife was driving my car and lost power steering. Stripped it down...

It's been that long since I removed the exhaust manifolds, I can't remember if there's a gasket between the intermediate pipes and the turbo merge housing/elbow or not? Vagcat doesn't list one, elsawin says "not installed". Really!? I've never seen an exhaust system where a gasket or some form...

So, before I put the heads on, I set cyl 3 (needle lift injector cylinder) to tdc by eye, then put the crank pin in. So far so good. Before each head went on, I checked the plates would go in each cam. Heads on, pulleys loose, everything locked, tension belt, torque pulley bolts, remove locks...

So getting the cam covers off is simple enough but the heads themselves are proving to be a bit of a pig to do in-situ. On the n/s bank, the metal water pipes are held by a single allen-head bolt...but I can't get on it because there's a take-off obstructing it. Can I leave the exhaust...
