Well finally it's sorted. Two recon turbos later decided on an OE turbo, costly , but lessons learned. Recon turbos are only as good as the guy reconditioning it. The first blew, the second smoked like a chimney and whistled like a fire engine. My advice buy OE for piece of mind and less ball...

Sorted it all out with the Garage...i've put quite a bit of work his way so he sorted me out very nicely. reconditioned one was waiting for me when i got there....

Its in the garage right now and will be ready this evening...went with a recon total costs, inc fitting kit replacement parts, oil and filter change, labour....£580....came out of it lightly i think!

just found out there's a small indentation on the impeller...so i'm going with a recon...apparently all the hoses are ok....

A mechanic told me the 'ambulance sound' on my whistling turbo was from an indentation on an impeller. It got liads of power and pills like a train. I don't have a clue if he's right or wrong. Sorely need advice from a more experienced group!!! its a 2005 A3 2.0 TDi quattro sLine...82K on the clock
