Thanks for your help everyone. I will take a couple of bits off then let the man take it away! Hopefully I will be back one day when I get myself another Audi!
As much as I love my Audi, I really think it is beyond it's useful economic life. If it was anything other than a battered and bruised standard edition, I'd be tempted to put my hand in my pocket. I have another car to drive so it is just a case of getting the best money I can for it today...
In all honesty.... I neither have the space, the ability nor the inclination to take the whole engine out. What I didn't want to do is scrap it for £180 to find out later that removing a couple of nuts and bolts would've netted me double the cash!
They are bad enough that the mechanic said "I wouldn't even drive it to the scrappers if it were my car mate". I've got a long MOT fail certificate from Friday.

Hi,
My 'R' Reg Audi A4 has been declared dead....now, the engine is fine, it's the suspension and brakes etc that are shot. I was initially going to just call a scrapper and get the car collected, but was wondering whether there were any parts that were worth salvaging before I do? Seems a...
Cheers chaps. I think I may invest eventually. For now, I am still a bit of a novice so would prefer to have an experienced Audi owner help me out.
Dan - Sundays are a good day for me too. I will PM you with my number so we can sort something out.
Hello. Not yet. I've found that if you disable the interior sensor that it happens less. Still trying to find a way to get it on the diagnostic without it costing me 50 notes! I'll keep you informed
Hi. That would be an easy journey for me. Could you PM me details of what sort of days/times are convenient?
Thanks a lot fr the offer of some help! Alarm has been driving me mad all weekend
Hi,
Wondering if there is anyone near Harrogate with access to a diagnostic cable that may exchange a fault code reading session for some beer tokens?
My alarm is going off all the time and I have been told that reading the fault codes that it logs may help me pinpoint the root cause? I have...
I think you might be right with the bonnet sensor. The alarm went off twice for no reason. I don't know where to find the sensor though. There is no diagram in the manual. I'll check my Haynes as well. Might get the cheap leads and have a try at the free version of vagcom too.
Aragorn- can you advise me a little more on vagcom? I know what it is essentially yet there seems to be a range of prices for leads & software between £18 and £250!? Incidentally, when I locked my car last night I got no 'bib' but this morning I did.
It is indeed a '97. Sorry to sound like a proper dunce but what exactly am I looking for and how do I check. I should have mentioned that although keen and quite handy, I am a proper novice with this stuff.
Cheers
Is that an easy job? I will crack te Haynes manual out tonight and have a go.
Do you think that the alarm going off randomly last night could be linked?
Thanks for your help
Hi,
I am new to the Audi world and am having a problem which I hope is an easy fix (battery maybe?).
Basically, the car has stopped 'beeping' when I lock it (most of the time) and the boot sometimes sounds like its taking longer to lock than the rest of the car. Also, last night the alarm...
Right. Here's the long story shortened as best as possible. Two weeks ago I bought my 1997 R Reg - Audi A4 SE 110 1.9TDi Saloon.
Here are the main details:
150,500 miles on the clock
serviced on and off thorughout it's life - last service done (by a non-audi specialist) in January this year...
