Scan would normally show a fault code. Brake switch is normally the cause. Genuine only replacement suggested if it is and cheapo ones have limited life.

If the underside is well caked check the evaporator drain is clear underneath... No 11
Check the windscreen wiper plastic cover is seated as the rain can run down passed the lip seal and in through the pollen filter...

Did you lock of the flywheel and pump position?
The pump setting is really fiddly.
Set the pointer mid position and it should start then you need VCDS to do the dynamic timing.
I ended up with a jewelers screw driven as a really fine pry to get the dynamic set...

Most car locksmiths can also pull the code for £50.....
That's what I did and then used VCDS.....
Their pretty well known to the Mk1 TT DSG population and did the tests on my VP44 ECU. Not sure but think they also did the Wheeler Dealer dashpod on TV.

As above a Paint Thickness Gauge is an 'essential check' in case any repairs or previous work has been done.
I do admit I still work by eye and feel!
You should have a good 150 -200 um typically more suggests a repaint/repair and less well no space for errors.
A gentle full wet sand and machine...

Other than that its all bolts out bolts in stuff....
Air tools would of made it so much easier....
Cheapo sets of arms and links around £120....medium range around £600...Audi...well buy an another A6.
