It sounds like fork selector, this went on mine. I'll be honest, having a Quattro is probably the hardest part of the job, it is so tight around the gearbox area. My selector went with no warning, got in my car to move it and I just could not get it in to gear, once I did it was horrible to...
Got one of these myself, a 3 door version, a rare sight on the road and a cracking car in my opinion. It will be a shame to see her go when I sell her due to work commitments soon.
Sounds like the syncro is going, but like Kave says, could try a breaker for a box. The only thing in the back of my mind would be that input shaft, I hope I never have to remove my Quattro box again to replace that :noway:
It's worth noting sometimes it can get jammed in because the little coil comes loose inside. Someone rammed the front seat in to the dash on mine when there was a drink in the cup holder, I pushed it in and it would not come out. The coil had come loose inside.
Dave, the downpipe can be seen in the second pic mate so yep right next to the prop. The scores in the prop seem to line up with it.
Johnney1985, its more a rotational noise to be honest but appreciate the input. The downpipe wasn't moved when the box came off.
dre_S3, I don't think...
Had a little look under the car today and found a few marks on the prop:
Bit hard to make out I will admit, it's kinda hard holding a torch and taking pics.
Anyway while I was under there I changed the rear mount:
After replacing the noise isn't quite as bad. But more importantly...
As tuffty says its a Quattro tdi. To be honest the noise does increase slightly with acceleration. Are you suspecting a failed engine mount or something else? It seems to be coming from the area of the prop, that would be around the driver footwell. If that was the case then I suspect there...
After being plagued by a number of problems with my beloved A3 I think I'm finally down to my last one. Under heavy acceleration I hear a very odd clicking/cracking noise, it almost sounds as if something is about to break and because of that I always feel the need to let off. Now the problem...
I can imagine it's a pig of a job to replace those seals as well with the box in place? To be honest I should have had a bit more foresight when I had the box out to replace them there and then!
You can't fault the dealers! This is partly why I'm asking. I have a slight leak on mine that I've identified is from the transfer box but it must be a very slight leak as I've checked the fluid level on my gearbox and it hasn't changed! Still I think I'll need to tackle the leak before there...
Cheers mate  did wonder as I had a quick search on Google and there was some conflicting info regarding manual and auto boxes, thanks for clearing that up.
All I need to know is if the transfer box is a separate sealed unit to the gearbox on the manual Quattros? Does it require it's own oil or does it share the oil from the gearbox?
After seeing the thread yesterday I ordered a set of drop links and ARB bushes for my A3, at £18 delivered from Eurocarparts I can't complain and they turned up this morning. If it's like the A3, I'm thinking my A3 Quattro will be similar then it's a straight forward job, get under the car, 2...
jitvv, I just came on here to search for a very similar post, I'm battling some knocks at the moment and like you I think I have OCD when it comes to any funny noises in a car! The knocks are doing my head in. I may do some of the above as Tooks has recommended.
