Dual vs. single mass clutch kit?

Apologies if I'm stating the obvious! SMF are a lump of metal. DMF are two masses attached by springs to absorb torsional oscillation. If you replace a DMF with an SMF you will putting more strain on clutch plate and transmission. DMF are mainly there to improve 'driver comfort', but I've...

Hi All, Can I say first that I'm really greateful for the help you guys have gave me. I've decided to post here first as I would prefer to sell to an enthusiast who may be able to get it going again. I can't source "just a head" - maybe you'll have more luck - or an engine crane. So, a W...

    1.8T Quattro - Seized Cam

There were a few moments involving fairy liquid and a hose yes :) I'll try and get a better shot of the followers - I'm hoping that if these are OK I can be more certain the bottom end is OK - if I start taking big end caps off I could make things worse! No-one seems to sell "just a head" so...

Hi, Finally managed to get the photos. They're about 2.5MB full res, zooming in things seem quite clear! http://www.cmat100.f2s.com/pistons.JPG http://www.cmat100.f2s.com/cam_bearings_ok.JPG http://www.cmat100.f2s.com/exhaust_valves.JPG http://www.cmat100.f2s.com/head_damage.JPG...

Hi tufftybloke - Yes I do - when I get a chance I will host them somewhere (digi-cam currently at girlfriends folks house). The head is without a doubt toast as cam chewed out housing!

    1.8T Quattro - Seized Cam

Sorry to bring up this old thread again but I'm hoping someone can make some sense of this. Got the head and sump off, findings:- 1) All pistons have "kissed" all exhaust valves. Exhaust valves show no obvious signs of damage. 2) All exhaust valves were open, Inlet closed. Pot 1&4 @TDC...

    1.8T Quattro - Seized Cam

    1.8T Quattro - Seized Cam

I wish I knew how I could tell if the same happened to me......DOHC is a long way from my MG Maestro Turbo.......laugh at your lesiure :) I hope once I get this sorted I can contribute to the forum by explaining what exactly happened. I'm sure I will not be last to have this happen. I've got...

    1.8T Quattro - Seized Cam

Now you mention it I see, given the current state of affairs I may introduce Mr. Cambelt to Mr. Stanley :) At a minimum I will have to re-set the timing from scratch so if that is a really stupid idea please let me know!

    1.8T Quattro - Seized Cam

Hi All, Can I say that I am a complete muppet, I'll take the "I told you so" on the chin an accept that I am blonde - I was looking at the inlet cam cover. :tapedshut: Got the cover off - Both cams are rotating, the exhaust cam eat into the head (by the pulley). Took the offside cam bearings...

    1.8T Quattro - Seized Cam

Cheers guys, RAC man diagnosed cambelt but I expected more of a bang. When we got it back I pulled back the cambelt cover, turned it over - cambelt OK, no compression and a lack of movement under the rocker cover. The car is in really good nick but the cost of swapping the engine etc is worth...

    1.8T Quattro - Seized Cam

Can we just humor me and assume that the top end is bu**ered due to oil starvation :) When I get to the car I'm willing to take a photo to prove I'm not nuts. I've seen said driver put oil in with the engine running (I know) and oil did fly all over the place, quite funny at the time. Car is W...

    1.8T Quattro - Seized Cam

It actually wasn't me driving, but I didn't want to start the thread like "My girlfriends brothers girlfriend was having a bad day, it was on the M56 and raining........" :) There's definately a big lump of metal that usually spins, but isn't now :) RAC man showed me.

    1.8T Quattro - Seized Cam

Duh on my part - I meant oil cap - No idea why I typed that!!?? Pretty sure it's a cam I'm looking at - it's an AJQ engine (if that makes any difference).

    1.8T Quattro - Seized Cam

Hi all, I think I'm another victim of the oil sludge issue. Oil light came on, checked oil level, engine sounded fine, no overheating etc and tried to make it home. Driving gently at 60mph, then a loud sqeaking noise, dumped it into neutral, engine cut out and coasted to hard shoulder...
