Best thing you can do for oil is go to a VW dealership. Not as dumb as it sounds. £35 for 5 litres of 5W40 that meets and exceeds VAG requirements. Bargain.

Lucky people! Car went in for clutch this morning. Was keeping my fingers crossed about the fly... Just had a phone call. Thought by the feel of it that it was a clamping pressure issue, but it wasn't. Friction plate burnt out, scored the fly slightly, but its also out of tolerance, quite badly...

My clutch wants doing too (TDI). When you give it some stick going through first, change into second vaguely fast it slips. Don't worry too much about the flywheel. Its going to be very expensive if it does need to be changed, but the chances are it won't need it unless you let it get really...

That would make perfect sense to me! The sensor not only sends info to the temp gauge, but also the ECU. ECU is trying to maintain the perfect AF ratio, so if it thinks the engine is colder than it is, its going to be injecting more fuel. Also on petrol engines, this could cause it to run worse...

Having this exact problem! Was going to go and buy a thermostat today, just as well I saw this! Looks like that external guide is for 20VT, as its american and they didn't have 1.9TDIs over there, just the 2.7s. Going to have a crack at this later, will post pictures if pos.

I had a similar problem, not quite the same though. Replaced battery. Car had been locked overnight with key, pressed unlock on key (doesn't work), opened car with key, turned ignition to on (but not starting the engine), press unlock, lock, lock, remove key. Bob, should be, your father's brother.

Mine as it was about six months ago... USP front now, factory one met a fox at ~100. Edit: Sorry for wacking great picture...
