Thought I'd post up on this for anyone else having the same problem. Read back through the thread for symptoms.
Took out injectors, cleaned and fitted with new o-rings - no change
PCV pipe work replaced as had got soft, along with the brittle outlet itself (124 quid!)
Finally tried...
Will do Aragorn. Is there anywhere to get a wiring diagram for an AAV engine so I know what pins are for what? I'll also check the fuse box.
Cheers
Darren
Ok, today's update.
Wires to MAF sensor are clean and unbroken.
Spark plugs are normal colour, brown and not at all sooty. Have cleaned connections to coil pack and plugs.
No change. Start from cold, fires up straight away and sounds normal for around 10 to 20 seconds before runds...
Thanks for coming back to me Aragorn - presumably there would be a DTC if there was an issue with any of the coil packs? I'll check the spark plugs, but guessing they'll be sooty anyway. I will check out the wiring around the MAF though tomorrow and let you know.
Cheers

Ok, quick drive and still no power, and when back on the drive, stalling. Have the MAF DTC back again but no MIL so far. Can anyone advise on what to do next? I don't want to start just replacing stuff for the hell of it, or are there tests I can do?
So far - MAF replaced with proper Bosch...
Next update - fitted brand new and correct Bosch MAF sensor - cleared the DTC for the MAF and no other faults showing, but still lumpy running.
Have looked at VCDS and measuring blocks
Block 1 is showing -26% Lambda until temps up to normal (88 Deg) and then varying -5% tp -10% unless revved...
Hi Guys,
Right, the patient is our usually rock steady reliable Bananamobile, otherwise known as our Y Reg, A4 B5 Avant SE. It's just coming up for 126k miles and has thrown up a running rich code recently, resulting in increasingly poor performance on acceleration and cutting out at idle...
Hi Murran,
I think we're to the stage now where it's got to be checked for gas and then look at getting a quote for dryer. If it's low on gas anyway, I'll probably change the dryer meself and the get the system regassed.
I'll keep you posted on progress.
I did do a check check of the vents...
Hi Aragorn, thanks for that - maybe I'll try a few local places and get some quotes. Anyone got a recommended place in or around Newbury/Basingstoke?
Cheers

Hi Murran, pump definitely cuts in and out when the aircon is set to low, as does the electric fan. Clutch is working properly too. Assume that it's gassed as ECON light goes on and off on the button.
Thanks Scott - can see dryers on ebay - any recommendation AP Lockheed or other?
This looks too good to be true - AUDI A4,A6,80 ,100 AIR CONDITIONING DRYER TSP0175282 | eBay
This AIR CONDITIONING RECEIVER DRYER for Audi | eBay or this AUDI A4 RECEIVER/DRYER/AIR CONDITIONING | eBay seem more...
Right, update time.
Just been out (in the rain!) to see where we are. Engine running, stat set to 'Lo' - both fans running. Pipes are not getting chilled, so I'm guessing that when the pump was replaced, they didn't change the dryer. Can I change the dryer and then go get the system leak...
Hi AndyMac,
Thanks for the input - will the fan come on as soon as the AC is on? I'll turn the temp down to 'Lo' and see what everything is doing.
Aren't there 2 fans on the rad?
Cheers

Hi Aragorn,
I thought that those C numbers were error counts rather than values? Anyway, yes it does heat the car, so maybe you're right on the flaps and holding on to the pipes is a lot easier than pulling panels off - I'll check later when the car is back and report back.
Is there anything...
Hi Murran,
That certainly makes sense - I'll do that then and see where we are. Can't work on it tomorrow as off to Santa Pod for the race retro in the Montecarlo - come over and say hi if you're there - I'm on the BetaBoyz stand.
I'll report back my findings.
Cheers
Darren
