I can't say mine does that, but I tend to just ignore it and keep to a regular maintenance schedule. Just go by your odometer and do any regular service / oil changes at the suggested intervals or when you think is necessary.

Mine fades as well around the edges, and it seems to do it when it gets hot outside or in the car.

ImolaS4, it's pretty much what you're describing. That the car slows down as the downshift occurs as if brakes were being applied slightly for a second. There's no strange noises or clunking or anything, upshifts are all smooth. I never noticed anything like it on any of my old cars...

Where in Canada are you located? I think if you do some shopping you can find a better deal than 20-26. I've seen a bunch of 01's for around 22,000 with about 75,000km's. A 98 1.8T for 18,500 sounds like too much. You could probably get it for 15k.
