As the title states, when the climate control is in 'auto' mode it never seems to use the centre two vents on the dashboard, only the two side vents. Is this the way it's supposed to work?

There is plenty of spare space under the boot floor to store small items in my A3 saloon.

At what point did he actually snatch the keys from you? You seem unconcerned and relaxed when he actually gets into the driver's seat. It would have been difficult for him to drive off if you had the left the bonnet open, but at the time you probably didn't know he would proceed to drive away.
