Sorry guys to ask the question but does this also affect the 140 2.0 TDIs? Had to replace a failed injector last year (Dec) and would very much like that £600+ cost refunded and the other 3 changed FOC!! Infamous BLB engine with modified balance shaft drive.
Grateful for a stear. Assume it's...
Just read the thread and wanted to add my experiences. A4 2.0 TDi BLB (yes the dreaded BLB!) engine (84,000 mls) started missing on idle about a month ago. VAGCOM showed a No 2 cylinder misfire. Replaced igniter/glow plug loom on spec, still had the same problem! Then replaced the glow plug...
Madphil - Sorry to hear about your problems. Sounds like the same problem but I would get it checked out. According to ETKA (the Audi parts catalogue), the early BPW (VIN No up to 8E -6-080 171) has the chain drive for the oil pump whilst BPW engines fitted to cars with VIN Nos after 8E -6-080...
Been a while since I posted but it seems like there are still problems out there. Just wanted to add to Nathan's post that it is usually the plastic tensioner that fails first and then the chain starts to whip and wear the teeth of the sprocket away - at least that is what happened to mine...
Weggie - I hope your repair has worked out OK. I am still waiting for mine to be completed having decided to go down the modification route, mainly becuase of the potential problems with the cranshaft sprocket and the tensioner 'weak link' in the system. The tensioner pretty much broke in the...
I am sorry to hear about an engine failure at only 22K miles - so much for the Audi quality!! Just to clarify, the chain tensioner problem does not include the BRE engines as the oil pump & balance shaft assembly on these engines is spur gear driven. The problem is on engines with the chain...
PhilA4 - According to your VIN, looks like you have the later BLB with the spur gear. Suggest you double check with your local Audi dealer to make sure. Unlikely that the service history book will show any repair work. Warranty is worth considering depending on the small print.
OK Guys according to ETKA, the original configuration for the BLB engine oil pump balance shaft is as follows:
For VINs to number 8E*6*080171 the chain drive is original fit
For VINs from number 8E*6*080172 upwards the spur gear drive is original fit
sline29 looks like you may have the...
PhilA4 - I am more than happy to do so but I would caveat my response with please double-check with Audi as cars/engines may have been modified since initial build and ETKA will not show that. Will you get a full service history with the car? How many miles has it done? Would strongly suggest...
P Crr - Check your VIN with the data given in ETKA. For VIN to number 8E*6*080171 the BLB engine has a chain drive (diagram 115-35), for VIN 8E*6*080172 onwards the BLB has a spur gear drive (diagram 115-36). When I put your VIN into the ETKA I have access to, it comes up with the spur gear...
P Crr - At the Audi option start screen in version 7.0 at the top of the screen in the middle there is a box that is entitled FI Search. Type your full VIN into that box and then hit return. A pop-up Car Identification screen will appear giving you all of the details of your car (including...
tomgreen78 - According to ETKA that I have access to your VIN data says you have a BRE engine (which has the spur gear balance shaft drive) and HCF gearbox. Your V5 should also state your engine number. I would recommend you double check with Audi that the drive is that type.
Weggie - ELSAWIN is the Maintenance manual (which does have a link into ETKA), another very useful tool especially when you are embarking on something like your job. I secured access to both and found them very descriptive with good diagrams. A much better workshop manual than the old Ford...
Am answering a few posts in one here! I think your neighbour is confused! There appear to be 2 types of oil pump/balance shaft drive, namely: chain drive with sprockets (cogs?) and spur gear (like a gear box). Earlier BLB engines had the chain drive whilst older BLB models had the spur gear...
