It would certainly be strange if yours don't work when set to auto. As you say, they wouldn't really be DRLs if you can't switch them on in the daylight!
I'm 100% mine are on in the daylight when set to auto. I alway see them reflecting off cars in front of me at traffic lights.

I have auto lights too but I don't have a thumbwheel for DRLs. The only thumbwheel I have is for adjusting the dashboard lights.
If I set the lights to 0, all lights switch off, whether it's day or night.
Setting the lights to Auto ensures the DRLs are on permanently and of course the xenons...
I don't think the GTI-R will be using the S3 engine in it's current form. I heard they'll be using an uprated version of the 211PS/350nm engine from the A4, which is also supposedly going into the new standard GTI.
We managed 7% on my company S3 Sportback. They were only going to give 4% at first. Sportbacks in general are more popular, so you probably won't get as big a discount as you would on the 3-dr.
Sure you're not getting confused between Audi Music Interface and Multi Media Interface? The RNS-E system in the A3 uses the MMI control logic. You need to purchase the AMI option on the A4/A5/A6 in order to get full track display etc.
Well my educated guess would be that improvements to emissions and fuel consumption would help to improve sales in the A3 range as a whole, as clearly higher fuel prices and tax hikes are going to hit people. Audi, along with BMW seem to be two leading car manufacturers in this area recently...
