The 140 8v was never fitted to the A3 - IIRC it was only used in Skoda Superbs and there were problems with it. All 2.0TDi engines in A3s are 16v. You will be lucky to get a 170 for 8k. They were released for late 56/07 reg - first ones are coming up to 2 years old. If you can stretch to it...

The 140 engine is noisier than the 170. The old A4 was quieter, but being a more expensive car when new it may have better soundproofing. The new A4 2.0TDi cabin is very very quiet even when cold, but outside the car there's no doubt it's a diesel.

I agree with Sem. I reckon you could be in a brand new Audi for the cost of the second hand one. My first A3 was brand new because I could get a much better deal than the one on the forecourt. Configure a new one on their website and see what the difference actually is.

The only extra over standard SE spec are the leather, parking sensors and the bluetooth. Everything else is what makes it an SE.
