    20v coupe quttro

Breather pipe running round back of engine and into side of block has probably collapsed and crank pressure is now building up - see www.20v.org for this problem and anything else you need to know for your car.

just been quoted £495 extra for 1.8t sport...

No comparison - 1.8T is a different league. Where do you 20 year olds get your money from? - I was still having to put up with Morris 1000s and Metros at that age, (and it was not that long ago!)

    cambelt done.

Not my local VW dealer - official line is that they will only replace if there is an obvious defect! They did add that if it was required, they would only charge a minimal labour cost as most of it is apart anyway! - they are so generous.........

    Strange Characteristic?

Most modern cars do this and have read before that is something to do with the lambda cycle - for a moment the mixture out of sync with the oxygen sensor (lambda probe) re-calculating it.

    cambelt done.

Well, I mangaed to do the cambelt yesterday - actually on my girlfriends golf turbo but AGU and identical to A3 1.8T so relevant here. All went OK but a very time consuming job (thanks to HTC for his printout as helped no end - see his previous post) Car has done 86k and to be honest belt...

    A days cleaning latter and....

[ QUOTE ] RichA3Turbo said: Personally, i think the standard wheels are just plain horrible. The A4 1.8T standard 16's were actually wuite nice wheels which i think they should have used on the A3 too...but they could have been bigger! Get some 17's or 18's on there and will improve the look...

She's here (more pics to follow when light)

Silver calipers. My vote would go to keeping it all standard! Lovely car!

    A days cleaning latter and....

Lovely looking car - keep it standard. I think the current wheels suit the overall look of the car. That colour shows the delicate, well proportioned lines of the car perfectly and I personally think bigger / multi spoke wheels spoil it. S3s are a different matter because they have flared arches...

    S3 vs Wood Pigeon

Pigeon breats shallow fried with caramelised shallots and red wine sauce......mmmm!

    How much........!

Worst cambelt I have done was an Audi 90 20v (fantasic engine though) Very little room, front bumper, crossmember, auxilliary rad have got to come out and you need special tools and a scaffold pole to undo the crank pulley! Had 4 over the years so knew the procedure fairly well - take ages...

    How much........!

I know this is often covered but just asked my local dealer - in Newbury, Berks for cost of a standard oil service and a cambelt change (AGU engine 1.8T) Service £129 plus vat cambelt £400 plus vat + anything else they find! Over £600!! Glad I am doing it myself - £105 for parts including new...

    Pulling to the left

Mine does follow camber quite a lot too - so does exactly same as yours on motorway. Worse now that have c**p Dunlops on front. Was fine with Michelins!

Star Performance Testing Day – Pt5 Power Figures

The only car that I have had chipped was a 97 golf 16v about 1 year ago with a well known midlands tuner. Figures produced were pure fiction. Suposedly was a 'good one' as had nearly 160bhp before they started and 172 bhp when finished. Still felt cr*p. I have had cars with a genuine 170bhp...

    brake recall

My sister recently bought a 97 A3 and her local dealer requested that she book it in for a brake recall. Just checked with my local dealer about my car (97 t sport)and they want it in next week for the same problem. Does anyone know anything about this? Is a hose problem apparently.

TSPORT - Old and low mileage, or new and high?

Agree that a MAIN dealer will give peace of mind. Maybe I should clarify between main and independent dealer or trader. I can understand using a main dealer but would always go private before any other type of dealer!

TSPORT - Old and low mileage, or new and high?

Bit harsh! Whatcar valuations are far more realistic than you might think! In the real world a 99 1.8t with 60k odd miles is worth high £7s. How much premium you wish to pay a dealer is up to you!

How can you test if your clutch is on its way out?

Unless you changed the gear ratios at the same time as the dv then that is not possible!

TSPORT - Old and low mileage, or new and high?

As a side note, a friend of mine has a 18 month old 1.8t, I have a 97 and he prefers mine! His is always going wrong and does not drive quite as well. I however must admit that his satin interior is very nice. Also his car is solid black and because is sprayed in water based paint is always...

TSPORT - Old and low mileage, or new and high?

Eary 1.8ts (including golfs) had timing belt change at 120K and is written in service schedule - they changed to 80k a few years later. There are no real known failure horrors. Water pumps then that is another story........... Personally I would buy a mint private early car with full history...
