A colleague of mine had the same problem on his V6 Golf 4-Motion, I think it turned out to be a sensor of some sort, I'll ask him tommorow and let you know for sure.

Just another thought, if it was the alternator would the battery charge warning light not come up on the DIS??? I'm not sure myself might be worth looking in to though. To test whether it is the battery or alternator you need a voltmeter, you can pick up a cheap digital one from most car shops. Start by testing the voltage across the battery with the engine off it should be reading roughly around 12v, it may still read this if the battery was recently charged...
