right I think its safe to say after a few days of driving the brakes are normal again. doing the pedal pump method of bleeding certainly worked a lot better than the pressure bleeder way. Just got to tackle the spring next.

Ok thanks, thats quite helpful, it confirms its standard suspension. Next question is - is the quattro rear suspension different to the FWD cars, the ebay listings don't make much sense at all.

At last after a couple of problems this is now fixed and it turned out to be quite a simple fix in the end, thought I'd write a brief summary of what I did to help anyone else out who may have this problem in the future. I should have taken more pictures but I just wanted to get on and get it...

So far so good. Took the entire leg off to get some space to work in and as you can see the bearing is absolutely shot, must have been 5mm play in it. Just got to remove the new one now and refit everything. Cost so far £300 for the box, dread to think what a garage would charge.

Its a 2012 2.0 TDI quattro A4 B8 6 speed manual.
