sounds like a bearing, have done gearbox oil change and tried some stuff for "noisey" gearboxes mad sod all difference!
its a dronen noise even when clutch pushed in and doing 30 mph +

The A4 has had the VP44 refurbed by Bosch repair centre
tank pump all checked, system primed and checked for leak/pressure in all...
How do you know its faulty?
These are not really a lift pump but more a mover, the take fuel from cavities in tank to main section the pumping is done injector pump
Should be an inspection panel under back seat but the pump on older 2.5 was down in tank base

After having the following done to my 1999 A6 Tdi 2.5 -
Turbo Refurbed
Injectors cleaned and tested
Crankcase breather ( thanks to Audi-Sport for part nums)
Timeing belt
Injector pump belt
all adjusters for above
Cat bypassed
EGR bypassed
Full flush of fuel system twice using Wurth...

N70 is on newer BB5 platform so not as easy to unlock on certain networks,yes the vodafone version can be unlocked via code,costs run from £20-£50 to have it done but try vodafone themselves and see how much they will charge
Just watch 3 dosent shut the handset and simcard down if their system...
