Paint bubbling/corrosion on edge of roof

Well, my '97 A3 is afflicted with the rusty doors sills, but I haven't noticed any corrosion around the roof seams (last time I look anyway!). If you're looking to buy, make sure to have a good look at the roof seams/gutters and the bottom edges of the doors, just above the black strip (on an...

IMPORTANT ALL READ. Rusting bottom of doors, when will it be yours?

I paid a tad over £300 two years ago to get one door treated and partially resprayed by a small local bodyshop. I think I was quoted around £500 for the two doors. Note that the only permanent cure would be to reskin the door, and that, in the words of an employee at another (VAG-approved)...

IMPORTANT ALL READ. Rusting bottom of doors, when will it be yours?

Well, I've finally(!) got round to tackling the nearside door on my '97 A3 (I got the offside one sorted out at a bodyshop a couple of years ago, though the rust is starting to come back again :-() The rubber strip had previously resisted my attempts to remove it, but after squirting WD40...

    Slow wipers

If they're slow and juddery, could be that your wiper linkage has seized up. Happened to mine at about 80k miles.

    side repeater removal

On the pre-MY2000 A3s, the repeaters are held in with a plastic clip moulded into the side. I used a strip of plastic cut off an old credit card, slid between repeater and body to push in the clip and prise out the repeater without damaging the paintwork.

    lumpy idol,poor running when cold

I had a problem recently with "hunting" idle revs, usually when warm. Turned out to be a crack in the short vacuum pipe moulded into the the air inlet hose between MAF and throttle body (1.6 AEH engine).

IMPORTANT ALL READ. Rusting bottom of doors, when will it be yours?

Just to follow up...I popped round to my local Audi franchise to pick up a tailgate wiper repair kit (another story...) today and mentioned the rust on my A3's doors, which is starting to become quite noticable. The warranties guy came out to have a look at it. He didn't pay any attention to the...

    abs sensors

I've had 3 ABS sensors go wonky on mine. Usually starts as an intermittent problem triggered by moisture then gets worse. I got mine replaced, though I don't know if all they need is a clean-up -they're pretty simple devices. Held on with a 5mm Allen bolt which is usually seized...

    Heated mirror

When one of mine went, I got a replacement glass from Euro Car Parts. It's fairly easy to fit - just prise out the old mirror and disconnect the terminals, then do the reverse with the new one...

    peeling interior trim....

When I bought my A3 (when it was 4 years old), the door armrests/handles were peeling quite badly, but I talked the salesman into replacing them , and the replacements so far haven't peeled at all, 4.5 years on (touch wood). Either they made the coating a bit tougher, or I've been more careful...

IMPORTANT ALL READ. Rusting bottom of doors, when will it be yours?

Can someone explain exactly how you get the rubber strips (A3 style, rather than S3) off the doors? On my '97 A3 (which is bubbling just above the strips), I've unscrewed the screws in the front lower corner of the doors but they appear to be captive, and the strips show no sign of budging...

No A3 Hayne's Manual - is VW a good alternative?

The Haynes Golf IV/Bora manual (3727) is quite useful - mostly the same as the (old) A3 (Ur-A3?) except for bodywork and interior, and even then they're similar. IIRC, it covers all the A3 engines (1.6, 1.8, 1.8T, 1.9TDI).
