Hi everyone,
I've had email from the web page here where I wrote up the fix: a chap in Australia was told the new clip was no longer available by a dealer there, who then tried to sell him a regulator for £130ish. Can anyone confirm if the part is still available, at least in the UK?
Chris
My next-door neighbour had a boxfull. Standard rivets, but unusually long. He restores Land Rovers, so had a good selection. The ones I used were longer than the originals, but fitted OK- you just have to use the rivet gun more.
I suspect 'couldn't get' means 'couldn't be ***** looking for'.
The pulley revolves all the time, but when the compressor is on, a clutch engages inside the pulley to drive the compressor.
Check the belt first, other than that it sounds like the compressor or clutch.
The rivets are standard pop rivets, but quite long. I've done the regulator swap (the printout you have is probably by me....) and it isn't too hard. Took me a couple of hours.
You need to check you have rivets long enough to pass through the regulator and the frame.
There were problems with Bosch MAFs at one time, but they seem to be cured now. I replaced the MAF on my TDI with a Bosch for about £80 form ECP, and it transformed it. I'd steer clear of the cheapy replacements.
I don't think VAG-COM will pull any codes for the windows. When I had mine apart the only code recorded was against the radio, which noticed the speaker was disconnected.
The engines are bomb-proof, but at least one person here has had sticky VNT mech on the turbo at 140K. IME the first thing to degrade is suspension bushes.
A sport is fine unless the roads are very bad or the rear bushes are going (like mine!). Trim is nicer in the sport too.
You won't regret a TDi- performance is pretty good, economy fantastic.
Try a Scirocco some time :-(
I'll admit my passenger one took a few mnutes to line up, but as door panels go, they're OK. S3 ones might be harder- anyone else know?
It really does seem to be happening a lot. Like you say, you can coax the window shut by clicking the up switch a lot and guiding the window up by hand. It's easiest with an assistant.
I've edited the guide to try to clear things up a bit. Basically:
1. Orignal clips seem to be blue or green.
2. A new regulator I bought had orange clips
3. The modified, better clips are pink, with a metal insert.
4. You don't need to buy the bit that wraps around the window, just the clip...
