Hi.

I have just bought a 05 plate a4 2.0 se diesel (not a quattro). When i turn the wheel when the car is not moving there is a noise from the steering.

When the car is moving the steering is as it should be.

Any ideas please?

Cheers.

check your power steering fluid, are you sure you just cant hear it when your moving??

maybe get a mechanic or 2 to listen to it, could be the pump..

thanks m8.

the fluid is ok. i have had a mechanic look at it and he recons its the pump

cheers

Before you go for the pump, check the alternator pulley. These regularly seize and cause noise when moving the steering wheel. Take your belt off and check it rotates both ways.

thank you for the reply m8

can you explain what to do a bit more please.

im a bit daft

i was under the impression that the alternator pulley should only turn one way. If it turns both ways its no good! Dont quote me on that though.

No mate, it has to turn both ways. It's got a slip clutch in it to allow for constant speed. You need to remove the alternator belt, lock the drive shaft (there is a tool to do this, but I read on another forum that someone pushed some wood though the holes in the casing to stop the internals moving) then try and turn the pulley both ways. When mine went, I could hear a slight rumbling from the pulley with the engine running.
