went to harrogate audi last week to get a new plate bed,mine was full of holes, and seen as i'd cut my plate down, they were visable. I'd cut my plate down to 440mm from 520mm, so it was 40mm off each side (only 5 letters in my number so plenty left). The big fat jobs worth parts guy wanted to see what part i needed, and when he saw what i'd done to my plate, started giving me grief about breaking the law. He told me to carry a proper pair of plates in the boot, cos when the police see what i've done they would nick me. I came away a bit ****** off to say the least, so i called at halfrauds on my way home where i got the plates made. They oringanally offered me 3 different size plates, 370mm,420mm and full size 520mm. I've searched the web and can't find anything about plate size, only font size and font type and misrepresenting the plate itself. After all that, have ever any of you guys had any trouble? Cheers.

As far as I was aware so long as the spacing between characters is correct and the font then the only other stipulation is there has to be a certain amount of plate around the letters i.e. the same gap amount of plate on the sides as the bottom.

its always the way tho, people who think they know what they are on about pipe up and get it wrong, its like at the weekend when i got pulled for my pressed metal plates even tho they are 100% legal, was just lucky i was next to my garage at the time and got the MOT guy to come out and confirm they are fine
this tells you all you need to know..Remember that the date the vehicle was first registered and not the date the plate was first issued is the important bit...

One point in which most people would fail an MOT is
For cars registered after Sept 1st 2001 Your plate must have
* The new font (79mm high) there are a few excepions motorbikes and some imported cars.
* The name and postcode of the plate supplier
* It must say "BS AU 145d" on it bottom right corner (not neccessarily bottom right but that's where it usually is) - It must also have next to this a small company name or logo (it is the name of the manufacturer of the plate) There are many different types,
mine say HHSP BS AU 145d. The HHSP bit is the manufacturer.
Other examples
"Gould BS AU 145d"
"UP BS AU 145d" etc etc etc
