I am no Mobile phone tech head so do not want to look silly asking in a shop.
Can i use a Iphone on the vodaphone network? I have a supplied work phone with a vodaphone contract, not pay-as- you go.
I wondered if i can buy a iphone and put my sim in? I have no idea if i can buy a pay as you go and do that are does the phone need to be unlocked etc.Any info would be great.

Hi chap.

OK two things. Firstly, Vodafone released the iPhone on their network on Jan 14th 2010, so you can buy an iPhone on a Vodafone contract (as I am on).

Previous to this, you would have to unlock your phone (easier than it sounds), thus allowing you to use any sim card in your phone. I also did this by buying a second hand phone from another forum member, unlocking it and using an O2 mobile with a Vodafone sim card.

Any other questions, PM me as I am likely to forget about this thread!

just buy a unlocked iphone off ebay, the unlocked term for iphone is "jailbroken" then put your voda sim in, job done

Be careful though. Apple are cracking down on jailbroken phones - not allowing them to install updates/download apps etc.

Just a quick one gents, I edited my original post as it is techincally against most forums' rules to post about "Jailbreaking", not that I have ever done it or ever thought about it. It is majorly frowned upon.

Also, jailbreaking and unlocking are two separate things. You apparently have to jailbreak to unlock.

You cannot, as above, download updates for the phone if it is jailbroken. However, users crack the downloads after a short period of time (although this is apparently getting harder to do).

agreed, on all views above, BUT whos phone is it ? apples? no, you pay for it so do as you wish with it. the last update to 3.1.3 was only to resolve the battery life issue they have, has it resolved it, NO.
as for apps, i have no prblem getting any apps, in fact once jailbroken why pay for them, cydia is great.
jailbreak is unlocking as lke you say it has to be jailbroken to unlock.
why not jailbreak ? thats like buying an s3 and sitting at 30 everywhere

Because it is against the user agreement of iTunes, the App Store and the iPhone . . .

Without iTunes you cannot back up and restore your mobile device. Or download updates. Without the App Store you can't download basic apps like AS.net/tapatalk and Facebook etc. . .

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's illegal, but it is a grey area that most would not chance.

When you agree to the terms of a Natwest bank account, you wouldn't use it for illegal purposes would you? Same thing, in a round about way.

(not getting at you, just making it clear why this sort of thing is not posted about on every other forum I'm part of).

Oh, and it also voids the phone's warranty - all the above are provided based on you agreeing to their terms and conditions.

Tell me something JD, with the fact you have an S3, have you ever broken the speed limit even if it has these limits in the Highway Code?

Ahem

I would make sure your contract supports the iPhone first

you tell him jase, ****** nige just goes off in his own little direction ( mainly south ) lol

voorhees is right you will need a special data tarrif to use the iphone, but as my dad has an iPhone on Vodaphone I know it's possible.

The networks are starting to unlock the iphone for free so the market will soon be flooded with second hand units, especially with the impending arrival of the 4G end of June ish.

So unless you don't care about the latest tech, I would hang out for the 4G. Or at least until all the iPhone owners start shifting their 3Gs's so they can buy a 4G :)

Good Luck :)

I have, from a reliable source(IT customer services for Voda), confirmation that you indeed need an iPhone tariff to make use of iPhone functions with a Voda Contract simcard, PAYG is ok though apparently.

Wow - how does the interweb work on that then. Suppose it must have to be a special PAYG card. Otherwise it will have you skint in no time :)

I have an 02 iphone 3G unlocked working on Orange for all functions & its JB'd on 313 FW which is the latest, so go figure when it comes to sim type for functionality.

PS. Jase I was just proving a point to our resident thread preacher, that instead of telling him about the EULA, he should consider his own shortcomings when it comes to the law etc before quoting user agreements, I'm sure his speedometer tells him when its above the limit, analogy end.

So I guess you wont be syncing with iTunes then NHM.

I have considered the JB so many times. Just waiting patiently until the warranty runs out first :)

mikesel, is it me or are you from another planet that doesnt read english ???????????? where does it say that itunes wont work ?????????? i also posted above that i too have a jb phone and never have any problems !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read read read before jumping the gun about something you clearly know very little about.

erm.. Well excuse me.. I apologise. I have been led to believe that iTunes 9.1 (the latest release) has been relocking broken iphones. I was asking, not telling??

EDIT: Also - you don't need a jail broken phone to have the network lock removed. O2 Unlock

not aimed directly at you mike, just caught in the cross fire i guess, the guy simply asked if he could or was there a way of using an iphone on voda.
you come on here and give him FREE advise and the get judge and jury going on at you. to many do gooders that never speed, never talk on phone whilst driving, buy all there music from itunes rather than download it for free elsewhere ! yeh right !
just for info mike itunes 9.1 is still working fine with my jb phone mate, if it wouldnt then the way round that is not to update to latest till safe, again not aimed directly mike.

they will only unlock an O2 phone, copied this from the link

From 10 November, the iPhone can be unlocked for O2 customers in the UK.
Pay Monthly customers

Your iPhone can be unlocked at anytime free of charge. If you unlock your handset and place a non-O2 sim into it, you will still have to honour the remainder of the minimum term on your contract.

Ok no worries.. I noticed it was a little heated. I am not against jail breaking, and had no doubts the ROM Chefs would find ways around it.

After reading further forums, people are saying (as you did) that the re lock is not always the case. After looking at my post, it's perhaps my grammar at fault. To which I would like to blame the smirnoff and coke at my side and my distinct lack of english skills. I have a 3GS, Girlfriend has a 3G and even my dad has a 3GS, I have just finished rolling out a collection of 3G's at work as part of my job using the provisioning tool. So although I know little about jail broken phones, im not completely stoopid.

Appreciate the reply though. Thanks

Well I am another in favour of JailB..........running 3g on fw 3.1.2, with a PAYG O2 which i unlocked because........well it was just so easy (thanks to blackra1n) and i like to tinker with my toys. Using all the available software through Cydia sources i can fine tune practically every single aspect of the iphone resulting in a very individual device. Cydia is also great at providing updates for any software which it knows you have previously downloaded........fool proof, and enables you to download almost every application developed for the iphone foc including the biggies like tomtom. It has basically turned a good phone into a perfect phone (and having been one of the "dont believe the hype" crowd when the iphone was first released i feel qualified to comment). Re the sim card.....if vodafone is like o2 for PAYG then yes you really do need a dedicated iphone sim. Fortunately these cards appear on ebay frequently giving you anything up to 1 years free browsing..........vodafone may do something similar.

Am i breaking terms and conditions.......probably
Am i taking a risk with jailb........probably
Does Apple rip people off through ongoing charges.....definitely
Would i recommend jailb.........absolutely.

^^^^^^^^^^^^ finally someone the same as me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! perfectly said, blackra1n, cydia, winterboard all the dogs in my eyes, could of said it better myself, a good phone now a briliant phone

If you are referring to the Itunes store then I dont need to use it at all but afaik it works perfectly as wheelie has stated, but if we're referring to local syncs, then it works 100% for me everytime aswell.

What ****** me of about the iphone is:

No BT sync which truly is a joke
No delivery report functions without inserting text into the beginning of the message
Tethering is charged extra which seriously is a **** take at £5 a month

I'm sure I've missed something that really did annoy me, but I have all these functions on my Tocco thats now 2yrs old & other handsets, thats what ****** me of about Apple, locks everything down for no reason apart from greed, the BT has the ability to work for all these things but they lock it out, that is just plain greed, Jobs is a cockerel on this particular thing.

No you dont need to JB, lower baseband & then unlock it, you could get a 02 payg sim & ask them for the unlock code, but I dont want to use 02 full stop as I hate the bar stewards, useless service, so prefer to learn something whilst unlocking.

Nhn, I have previously used a piece of software from www.iphonemodem.com which did a pretty good job of tethering and on my path phone didn't incur any extra charges.....all covered under the free browser usage with the iPhone sim.
You state the iPhone can't Bluetooth sync..... what exactly is it that you want to sync? Mine syncs contacts etc over by and since fw 3.1.2 will also happily stream stereo music over the a2dp Bluetooth profile.
Sorry to hear you don't like o2 but as far as I am concerned the coverage up here in haggis land is pretty comprehensive and their broadband support service is the best I have experienced and one of the main reasons I switched from orange broadband......along with the discount you receive because you are a mobile customer.
Ps afaik I didn't have to pay the 9.99 dollars for the modem software..I must have been able to get it foc through cydia or installous, have a check.

Cheers I'll check it out, but remember I'm on 313 & its closed some doors for somethings to be utilised.

BT sync interms of contacts, calender etc etc, it cant be done on 313 unless I missed something which I dont believe so & afai was aware was possible on earlier ones, but if you have running then thats interesting.

Did you notice any benefits to upgrading to 3.1.3??
Just wondered as I may or may not do this only when the time is right.
It would be a bit mental of apple to remove bt sync of contacts which is working on 3.1.2 with my old parrot bt kit and my current own bt with rns-e.

No I mean you cant BT sync contacts, calendar etc with your PC, only possible with usb, works fine with rns for phonebook btw, Apple seem to have locked out profiles, ridiculous given how many sync there phones with desktops & I dont expect to have to pay for a net sync tool, its pretty much a basic feature on amny low spec handsets anyway.

Ahhhh bt sync to PC.....sorry mate I was getting my wires crossed.

Doubt it on the iphone, only let you use 1 set, lmfao

My last post was expressing my realisation that we were messaging at cross purposes. I was referring to bt sync in car and you were referring to bt sync to a PC.
What does "doubt it on the iphone, only let you use 1 set" reference to?

It was sarcasm aimed at Apple, wires crossed, locked down etc etc, never mind

Got you now:thumbsup:......too late in the week/day mate!

Dont worry I'm half a bottle of prune juice down & 3 cans of danish export, whooppeeeeeeeeeeeee & tomorrow I have to do 3 spoilers ready for paint lol
