Hi guys, Newbie to this forum from Migweb (for vauxhalls) I know!

Anyway lookin to buy an A6 soon and was wondering wot i should look for? was lookin for a 1.9tdi as heard good things and like idea of 40-50mpg as currently gettin 26-30mpg out of me astra.

Anyway any info on common faults with either 1.8t or diesel or just opinions usefull.

Info on mpg of both wud b helpfull from the peps who drive them as book figures are usually crap!

info on handling and relaibilty and cost of spares/servicing wud b brill, and anything you fell relavent wud be great.

Anyway thanks in advance.

I looked at the 2.5tdi and the 1.8t. Both very good, but slow standard. The 2.5 was loud until it warmed up, even then loud.
I got the 1.8t CVT and had it chipped. Drives a lot better now. Running at around 210, was 150 standard
For economy go for the tdi. I get around 30mpg using the auto box, less if I use the gears. The tdi was better, 40+.
Both good though, you need to decide what is important to you, economy, speed or whatever.
I have never timed the acceleration so I don't know that, sorry.
Will have a play.

Well i've had enough of petrols, too expensive too run! i get 30mpg at best! Thats why i was looking at a diesel.

I was lookin at audi a6 tdi cos there bigger and quicker than my astra! and more economical.

Also anybody know what the diesels are like on high miles on reliability and parts that need replacing as a lot of the one i'm lookin at have 100000 + miles But the petrols are lower mileage so probabily less part need changing earlier.

To me anything below 13.4 secs to 60 is quick! (well quicker than mine!)

Acceleration is not too important providing it pulls well enough to overtake and go on motorway!

Looked up accel figs and 1.8t is about 9.8 secs and 1.9 tdi is about 12 secs.

The main things are comfort, reliability, cost of owning, and i think thats it.

And how u get 60 bhp by a chip? also was plannin to chip the tdi aswell bit more power as if 50mpg is avg i can afford to drop that a bit for a bit more power.

My mpg of 52mpg is about 20mins town driving and about 25minites on the motorway. If I limit the topspeed to 70mph I can get nearer 60mpg but as it is I cruise around 80mph. There is plenty of power when cruising and you never have to change down. I might try going for the 115bhp engine as the rumour is its much smoother. I've driven my brothers golf with the 130bhp TDi and thats a lot quieter

Cool! Does the mpg vary a lot depending on how u drive? like petrols do? Or is it better.
Basicially if ur a bit heavy on the right foot does it annihilate the mpg and thus the idea of getting a diesel?

also ne 1 got any views/experince of high milers?

Think the 1.9TDi is good for big miles. You see a lot for sale with 150K+ on the clock. I've done 10K with mine without any problems (mines now got 112Kmiles).
If you were very heavy with the right foot you may drop down to 40+mpg

Cheers for that mate, just wanted to make sure that if i bought a diesel and decided to take it for a bit of a blast it wouldn't burn a whole in my pocket! The driving i do is mainly classed as 'urban' anyway, even tho living in the country! Just wanted to make sure that buying a diesel wud be a wise investment to save me money! with the torque!

i got an a6 110bhp and it may be noisy on start up, but there aint much noise when running and you can hardly hear it inside the car, my 16V Mk2 Gti is soooo much noisier inside the car.

Brilliant car, Alpin tuning box fitted and it goes pretty good and still returns 50.5mpg avg and thats going to work, with around 30 sets of traffic lights to go through.

2.5tdi no where near as good one fuel and It aint that much quicker.

Cheers

Dave

know its not an a6 but i have a 1998 2.5 tdi a4, round town i get around 36 mpg and on a run anywhere between 47 - 52 mpg depending how fast i drive. not bad for a car with near on 200 bhp.
oh, the 2.5 tdi is miles quicker than the 1.9 110 version.

Fair Point Kris,

But the A4 is a wee bit smaller and lighter, and Ive been in both cars and yes the 2.5 is quicker but eats the juice quite a bit quicker as well. My car with the Alpin box takes it up to 145/150bhp ish and it makes a world of difference from the std 110bhp. It pulls great now and anyways they are both great cars Oh and the A4 is good too.

My mate has an ABT RS6 Avant, un-restricted and very very quick

Cheers

Dave

my old 1.8t did about 30mpg wherever i was and 0-60 in about 9.5-10secs, only thing i didn't like about it was the handling, it was front wheel drive and would understeer easily, now got the quattro a6 and handling is much better, i can actually accelerate in corners! the quattros however are a little thirstier on fuel

Yeah the front wheel drive is a bit of a ******, thats why beemers handle better but then again the beemers are more thirsty cos of it!
It's all got it's pros and cons, lookin at 1.9 cos i can afford it and wud chip it to get a bit more from it as a6 is a heavy car.
A 1.8t wud be nice but my mates got a 520i and (with our drivin) he gets 23-25mpg cos of short town like trips so i'd rather get diesel and get 35-40 round town and use the torque!
Also i'd like to make a diesel a bit sportier! be a little different and have an expensive car which is (relativly) cheap to run!

Got a TDi A6 now (well about 3 months ago) paid £3300 well pleased with performance from TDi (110 1.9l)

Now got 18" Rs6's and Jetex full ss system, well nice!

Congrats on gettin a car /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. I'm pickin up my new (6mth old) 130TDI Sport Avant this weekend (I Hope). /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Interested in changin exhaust at some point to combine with a remap Induction etc. Can you tell me where you got your Jetex system from got any pics?

I will upload sum pics and link them when i clean the car and take sum! lol.

Got the exhaust off ebay for £140 cos it was a factory second - backbox dented, other than that fine!
Well pleased with it sounds mint. it gives a raspy note (not loud) from 3000 - 4200 rpm and you can really hear the turbo!
Wud sound even better on a 1.8t due to higher revs.
But i'm pleased with it.

It's also got a K&N pannel filter on it now ready for a tuning box so should hopefully be at 140 - 150bhp!!!!
and s**te loads of torque!

When done i will rr it and see what it's chuckin out!
