Seeing as this was the first decent day of weather in somerset this year,I took the opportunity to cure the water leaks in my avant,I knew the rear washer pipe had become detatched from the joiner behind the passengers kick panel, simple job, 5 mins max.next battery out to clear the drains under battery tray and servo, sure enough full of all sorts of leaves and crap, replaced pollen filter at same time, now all this is obvious stuff, thinks to myself while I am at it will run the pipe from the boost gauge I fitted just before christmas,(couldnt finish it at the time ..rain stopped play)so takes the top of the ecu plastic box to route the pipe only to find the 10mm nut holding the box down from inside was missing!!massive entry point for rain!!a bead of silicone and a new nut and fingers crossed it should have stopped all ingress of water, also behind ecu box was full of crap so even if you have cleared your drains out, if you neglect to clear the rubbish behind this box it will just wash down and block them up again, hope this helps somebody, because i know b5s suffer with this problem.

Also worth checking underneath the battery. There's a chamber there that collects water run off from the scuttle panel between the windscreen and bonnet. I checked mine yesterday and it was partially blocked with leaves and stuff.

You don't need to take the battery out of the car to clear it, though it would make access to the drain easier. Here's how I cleared mine:

1: remove the plastic 'scuttle' panels - covering the battery and pollen filter.

2: make sure you can lift one side of the battery up - from the right hand side of the car as you're looking at it from the front (i.e. for Right hand drive cars, lift the side of the battery on the passenger side).

3: shove your hand down into the depths underneath - feel for a 'low point' which is the drain.

4: poke your finger through.

5: put everything back.

you may want to flow a hosepipe through from both sides to clear out any leaves etc before you put everything back.

And remove the "catch all grommet" under the battery as well otherwise you'll have to do it all again in 3 months time.
