do you have to remove the inlet manifold to replace the thermostat ?

My local independent added 3 extra hours of labour

4hours 20 min for an oil and filter change - temp sensor change and thermostat change

Does this sound unreasonable ?

IMO, no... inlet mani does not need to come off... the most difficult bolt to remove is the bottom one of the housing.... this can be got at by using a 1/4" 10mm socket on a wobble extension or by removing the 2 bolts holding the alternator on and moving it out of the way...

Granted removing the inlet mani gives more access but once you remove the trim and plate on the front of the mani you have as much access as you need and would still have the problem of the difficult lower bolt...

nice poll, i did mine without removing it or the alternator.

Ideally the alternator needs to come off tho.

I had my thermostat replaced back in November last year to fix the dodgy dash reading. I sent the well known change thermostat instruction page to the mechanics.. Just in case.

He told me that he started doing it the way the link said, then goes hey why not just pull out the alternator and away we go..
Looking at the invoice just now, it seems they took less than 2 hours to do the work..
The bill including thermo and new v belt (which was knackered) and coolant and time was 86 quid..

Access to the thermostat housing is a bit tricky but I managed it by just moving the cable from the alternator out of the way. I'm no pro and I managed it within an hour.....so I'd say the garage that did yours are pulling your pants down over it.

Thanks for the replies so far - Im starting to think I need to change my independent

Any recommendations on Audi/volks garages in the south West - I am just north of bristiol
