Scrappage wheels dilemma

The '95 2.6 which came in on scrappage had pretty much nothing I could harvest from it, drives superbly but cosmetically knackered.

It does, however, have a set of wheels. My gut feeling is that I quite fancy them, but what do you guys reckon? They're 17" RS4 replica type thingies, they're all a bit kerbed but will refurb well, and mine are desperate for refurb anyway.

What I hadn't realised was how different mine (from an '03 A6 S-line) are from the RS4 style. I prefer the RS4 but my only concern is that they could well be aftermarket units. I have no idea who they are made by, did VAG ever offer an RS4 rep with 10 mounting holes? Is there a general rule with unknown origin wheels, e.g stay the hell clear?

The bonus is that they come with a set of pretty recent Avons, which will save me mucho pennies as my current (cheap, Taiwanese) tyres are on their way out.

I always intended to get my current rims refurbed and painted anthracite, and will probably do this instead with the RS4s. I'll be using my exsisting centre caps (which are nicer) and keeping them brushed aluminium.

What do you reckon? Have 'em or steer well clear?
 
Yep seconded.

If you can have them, i'd nail them onto the car as they are, and get the genuine wheels refurbed, swap the tyres over and then flog the replicas on.
 
Yeah, I'd rather stick to genuine Audi rims if I can help it, It's just a shame the RS4 reps look so much nicer than the TT reps.

Free tyres, though... can't be sniffed at!

Maybe you can help me with regard to the scrappage scheme.

I've got a facelift B5 that will be handed in as part of the srappage scheme. I assumed the whole car would be crushed, i.e no parts removed for re-sale/salvage.

I'm guessing from this thread that i'm wrong. Could you please clarify what can be removed from the car.? Is the goverment just happy that the shell is scrapped and everything else in theory can be salvaged.

To be honest, there seems to be a bit of a grey area.

When I spoke to the chaps who come and collect the scrappage cars, they tell us that the cars go straight to the crusher and parts are very rarely removed from the car. It's all fed into the crusher. Of course this may vary from yard to yard. Yards with a higher volume of scrappage traffic may just crush and make money from the scrap steel, other yards who take in fewer cars may have the space and time to strip them for parts.

We don't give any specific details to the recieving scrappy, all they get is a reg. number and model type. They are never told what options the car has, what spec or anything like that. As Aragorn mentioned there are many things that break within the lifetime of the car and could legitimately be removed.

The governments objective is to get the chassis off the road, it doesn't matter if you keep the parts or the scrappy does. Every car we send to scrappage we get £30 for from the yard. As far as we're concerned, any extra value he gets from the car is a bonus. He's happy, we're happy.

I would not feel guilty at all about removing everything you feel like removing.

When a car comes in for part-exchange it usually goes through an appraisal and its condition is noted as the retail value depends on condition. If the dealer knows that it's coming in as scrappage, they won't care about the condition of the car, they still get their £1000 from the government, all is well. Removing all the juicy bits before it comes in will just render the car to be in "poor condition".

I see nothing wrong with bringing a car in minus door cards, rear seat, headlining, electronics etc. etc. As long as it moves under its own power and has a valid MOT, as far as the dealership are concerned it'll be fine.

That's we I see it, anyway.
 
is it me or is there very little difference between those wheels, is it from a distance they look different?
the spokes on second picture look a tad longer so probably make wheels look slightly bigger?

Would be nice to sell on some parts if they're any use to anyone before i hand it in on the scheme.

I would suspect components such as the climate control module to be worth quite a bit.

Was also thinking of the obvious such as floor mats, cd changer, warning triangle and tool kit. :)

Olds_kool:- Yeah, I had never noticed before but the difference leapt out to me when the scrappage car came in. The RS4 rep wheels (first pic) have a more pronounced inward dish towards the centre. Also, notice that there is a feature line on the edge of each of the spokes? On the RS4rep this fades out after a couple of inches. On mine (2nd pic) the line continues right to the centre, and if looked at from the side there is hardly any dishing at all. I believe mine are colloquially referred to as TTreps (embarrassingly...)

Low610:- Pleased to be of service. As much as I think the scrappage scheme is morally and commonsensically reprehensible, I do like free bits of A4! I just wish this 2.6 we have here was a bit more rich with spangly bits I can nick!

For those who are interested, here is a better view of the wheels so you can see the differences better

These are the RS4reps, note that they dish quite pronouncedly towards the centre

These are the TTreps, note that the spokes curve out but the hub isn't dished from the outside of the wheel. Both rims are 17"

Incidentally my rims, from an A6, are carrying 235/45/17s whereas the RS4s are wrapped in 225/45/17s (the correct shape for B5 rubber on 17"s, apparently...)

Hi there, my car is metalic silver.

When i decide what i'm going to do with regard to parts i'll post something on here.

I'll also try to find out what scrap yard the car will be going to so people have the opportunity to grab some bits that they need.
 
Ooooh, silver. Just what I need.

I would LOVE to come down and swap over my bonnet, if that's possible. I'll take mine off, put yours on mine and then put mine on yours, so there'll be no problem with missing panels!

What's wrong with your current bonnet.? Mine has a couple of stone chips but no dents as far as i can remember. I'll have a look tonight. So would what a good condition second hand bonnet be worth to you. ;-)

Mine has a dent and some scratches, hence why I wanna swap it.

£30 as a swap... £60 as a straight out purchase. Sound okay?

Need to see some pics first though, of course!

(you might be able to rig up a couple of bike lights in their place...)

Sounds fair enough, i'll keep you in mind, my bonnet is not perfect but its certainly dent free, i'll take some pics as soon as and pm you. :)

I've got some preface lift head light and indicators if you want them to trade with. just duct tape them on to the car before trading it in and they will never know

Thanks for that Sam, got a few more weeks with the car yet before the MOT runs out, i don't want to hand it in until the MOT has run out. :)
 
I thought the car had to have a valid MOT for it to be handed in...

If you're still okay about swapping the bonnet over (subject to photos), you'd better give me a bit of time to get down to you... where abouts in Northants are you?

I've been told that as long as the car has a valid MOT when i register for the scrappage scheme then i'm ok.

I'll probably hand the car in the day that the MOT is due. I'm going to be getting a basic little car as a replacement so i want as much time with the Audi as possible. :)
