My b5 1.8t doesn't seem to be able to do more than 27-28mpg even if i drive it really sensibly.
last week i sent the injectors away to be ultrasonicly cleaned before that i gave it a really good service with all the filters and plugs being changed,have checked out the ecu with our diagnostic machine at work and reports nothing at fault.
It looks to have recently had a genuine replacement air mass metre.
The only performance mod i have made is a decat pipe but it is doing the same kind of mpg as before fitting, i did check the co this morning and it is running at 0.7% at idle.

Any thoughts guys or am i getting about what i should anyway??

0.7% with no cat is very slightly high.

Ours was putting out 0.5% with no cat fitted.

Does the engine properly warm up? The temp needle should come up to 90c and sit exactly there.

The fact that its not logged any fault codes suggests the temperature sender and lambda etc is all fine.
 
It seems to get up to temperature pretty quick and does sit at 90c. Do you think i should be able to get more than 27-28 mpg??
 
we're currently getting about 400+ miles on a tank, so circa 35 mpg. 1.8t with CC remap, no other mods.
 
It depends how and where you drive it.

If its a lot of motorway, and you like sticking to the speedlimit, 35 should be attainable.

If all your driving is stop start inner city 30mph stuff, and you have a heavy foot then 28mpg might be about all you can expect.
 
I dream of 28.
I get about 250-280 to a tank in town.
but it will sit at around 30mpg at 75-80 on the motorway.
 
Just checked mine out again and i've just done 125 miles to £26 of fuel. Works out at just over 25mpg. boo whoo
 
I have done before and will again tomorrow. Wondering if the air mass is reading out even though it looks new it may still be a bit wonky!!
Since putting injectors back in after cleaning(with new seals) seem to be getting petrol smell on cold start but no signs of leaking anywhere!
 
Hmmmm... I thought my MPG figures were low, but looking at what everyone else is getting, my 32mpg isn't too bad. I was sat at 80mph just now and only returning 32mpg instant... which to me is very low. I would have thought a '36' figure would have been about right for it at that speed.

Mine's running REALLY rich at the minute though for some reason. When the new Lambda sensor arrives, I'll see if that makes any difference.
 
Checked for dtc's this morning and nothing to report, What kind of reading should i be getting from the mass on idle??
 
My trip has been on 23.9 for ages now dont do any motorway driving its a chipped tqs.
Thats just the trip though if i could be botherd to work it out probably a bit more.
Not too bothered by the fuel drives great happy with that just got a heavy foot at times.
 
i only get abot 25 average but then the wife is the main user in the week which is always short journeys, so it hardly gets a chance to get warm but on long journey's i can get 34+
 
I've been getting around 27mpg out of my 141,000 mile 1.8T... But then again my commute is on a quite twisty B road, mixed with some town driving. My 306 used to get around 30mpg and that was a 2.0 16v engine shoehorned into a small car. The way I see it, is to go my smiles per gallon, sounds cheesey but I get such a rush when I nail the throttle and feel the turbo kick in :jump:
 
i average 30-35mpg, do 50 miles a day on A roads, just cruising along at 60 mph usually.

get about 400 miles to a tank
 
I'm the same as Mugglesquop,

I do around 60 miles a day on A roads crusing on average around 50mph and i'm getting 33.3 to be exact. :)
 
i used to get 25 to 28 out of mine, same when my sister had the car and it was std. it is one thing that put me off the audi a bit, as i expected a bit better. still my r32 does 20 to 23, so could be worst.

I think it's time to swap my new MAF on! I only average around 30mpg on my n/a 1.8!
 
My MAF reading is way out apparently, hence why it's running rich. Might be something to do with the fire I had and melting a wire I didn't find. It's in for work on it now... even though it's got a new MAF on it. Wasted my money there then!

Anyone want a spanking MAF...? lol
 
Is it a proper genuine MAF from Audi? or an ebay cheapie?

The ebay ones have a bad press for being hopeless.
 
Nope... it's a genuine Bosch item. Exactly the same as the old one.
 
I've always fancied a new MAF, I have no issues at the moment that I'm aware of but haven't run VAGCOM for a while, my laptop and I have fallen out. But after twelve years and 75k miles I might just replace the MAF for the fun of it.

Currently seeing 100 miles per £15 (at £1.14 per litre) which I figure ain't far off what it should be.
 
What's the part number? I may be interested as I ended up buying the wrong one for mine! That, or they sent me the wrong one. Either way, the connector is completely the wrong shape!
 
I have a spare MAF for an APU (facelift) engine.

I bought a new one to fix a problem, and it ended up not being that... so I've got a perfectly servicable one available, if that's what you need.

The connector on mine is like an elongated 'D' shape...
 
Since replacing exhaust and changing thermostat my fuel consumption has returned to normal: around 23-26mpg in busy Birmingham traffic. Haven't been on the motorway yet, but I used to get up to 40mpg if I "drove sensibly".
 
Never done a decent run with the new engine yet, but i've never had anywhere near 40mpg outta the old one.

It would do about 34-35mpg sat at an indicated 80mph (73 on the GPS) on cruise control.

Maybe it would manage 40 sat at 55mph behind a lorry :p
