Have had nasty rattling sound since the heavy snow which has been diagnosed as CAT - have been quoted £350 (Kwik Fit) to £600 (4 Rings - official audi part). Any other places recommended

Is there much difference between official /non audi parts? I been told that with non audi part I am likely to get engine management light coming up - is this true? Also should I get rest of exhaust changed at same time?

Cheers

If your cat needs replacing ask people on here..

Depending on your model I have a cat..

Mines from a FWD 1.8T.. if it fits, ill sell it, it was taken off straight after passing mot so I can decat car.

Mine is a 2002 A3 1.8 SE (non turbo) - will yours fit? How much you looking for if it fits? PM probably be better.....

Still concerned a non stealers has told me this - any truth to it? I just want a quick fix so I can resell before MOT

Cat is a Cat is a Cat. One from Timex will do exactly the same job as one from Audi for half the price, cos I can promise you that Audi don't manufacture the Cats they fit to production cars anyway...

That is what I was thinking but independent audi-specialist claims 2 cars this week had cat changed by kwik-fit caused engine management lights..... I smelt BS

Would it not be a good time to consider investing in a sports cat.....?

You probably know about my cold start problem - I am getting rid of it as soon as weather warms up - just want cheapest fix possible - the nasty rattling is a bit of a giveaway....

EML wouldn't be down to the cat. The fitting of the cat maybe if they knock something loose etc., but not the cat itself.

Crappo :( - engine management light came on during drive to work.
Got RAC out to scan it - non VAG COM scanner - code P0420

DTC Definition: Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

Cleared code but definately needs to get cat changed asap - anyone know how many sensors are around the cat?? Might have to risk Kwikfit to get it done ASAP.....

Just quick update to story - finally got cat changed - aftermarket cat for 390 all in- they mentioned back pipe bracket was loose so need rewelding. Sounding and driving a lot better. But checking the rear the exhaust pipes have now gone back in even more than before ie you need to looking under the car to see the tail pipes. I questioned this and they say aftermarket cats shorter and hence tail pipe was moved.....

Any truth to this?? I say fair enough if Kiwk Fit but this was a VW/Audi independent - really dont want to name and shame......

If it was shorter i'd be suprised if the rest of the exhaust lined up on the mounts - sounds to me like they rewelded the bracket in the wrong place or simply haven't adjusted the fitting on the rubbers enough - you should be able to undo the exhaust clamps and pull out a little bit to move it forward
