I am going to attempt to replace my standard headlight bulbs on my A4 2.0 TDI S-Line Avant with brighter white bulbs.

Is this a viable DIY proposition or does it require some major structural surgery? Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Structual surgery - to change a light bulb - you've lost me?

Sorry.......to clarify.........is there any requirement to remove bumpers, grills, headlight units, air intakes etc in order to facilitate a headlight bulb change?

Hi comc
On a 2004 A4 you have to remove the headlamp to change the bulb. Can't say for a 2006 - but it may be similar.
There are 2 torx headed screws that have to be removed on top of the headlight & there are 2 hidden torx headed screws down behind the headlight that have to be loosened as the headlight fitting has slots that pull out from this. The headlamp shell has to be wiggled out & a cover removed from the back (which is held on by a spring clip) to access the bulbs.

Hope this helps - John

Thanks for that John.
I wonder if the method of changing has altered with the facelift.
I have only had the car since thursday last week and have had a quick check of the access behind each headlamp cluster. It would appear the nearside unit has very limited access due to what looks like an air intake.

This is how it's done on B6, I would imagine that B7 is not that much different? Easy when you know how!

Hi - Nice pics Jisumfish
Are they from the instruction booklet?
Yes I did forget - you do need to remove the air intake dicting, but on the 04 model this is just removing 2 self tapping screws & pulling the 2 parts off which just clip into place. But Jisumfish says it all.......

Now removing the back light cluster on the 04 A4 is another story!!!!

Thank you both for your help....the printed instructions are ideal and having only had a brief opportunity to cross-refer them to my B7, it would seem the method seems very similar.............now to go and source some bulbs!

Well......had a go at changing the dipped beam bulbs and managed to fit them without removing the headlight unit. Decided to try the HID style blue bulbs I had removed from my Jetta and thankfully they are perfect for the A4.
I also managed to fit a set of 9-led sidelight bulbs from Ultraleds.co.uk however the dash display now retunrs a parking light out warning which is annoying. Think I might have to return these in exchange for the single led versions with the in-built resistors. Wish I could keep the 9-leds because they do look superb and a good match for the HID style dipped beams.
