What does that code stand for?

Its just the engine code, in the same way mine is AKE. I'm not sure if the code actually stands for anything.

I searched that BEX is 190bhp, but i only have one intercooler. Its a jap import though.

So your is the last of the sports before they changed over to the Sline...
Was it just the Slines that changed over to the 2 intercoolers?anyone?

The paperwork i got when i got the car says 125kw which is 164bhp, but then it is stamped BEX, so i take it the paperwork is wrong?

BEX is the 190ps engine as stated.

My guess is your car has had an engine swap at some point........

Call a dealer and have them check your engine number from the chassis number or check the data sticker in boot (easier said than done!)

on my log sheet, next to engine number it says NOT KNOW.

I have been searching and there seems to be a few single intercooler 190's...

also if it has had an engine swap, how would i know?

Like I said check the data sticker not the log book. How many gears has it got?

I don't see how it can be a 190 with a single intercooler TBH

Also the 190's have 1.8 Turbo in red on the engine cover............

its a 5 speed tiptronic. please remember its a jap import, i dont know if they have different spec or somthin!

I done my best to look for a second intercooler on the left hand side. I can see the right side throught the front bumber, past the fog light.

Where is this data sticker? i tried looking for that a while ago, and couldnt find it.

where abouts in the boot? thats where i looked.

sounds like an engine swap, i have a BEX engine an it is a 190 6 speed, so i cant see how they would make a 5 speed, with a single intercooler????? when u do find out let us know

knowing of the previous owners, i cant see it being an engine swap. Women doing the school runs! unless something happened in japan, but then Audi themselves imported it over...

found it, and no mention of BEX, sticker says AMB.

I can only assume an engine change at some point in its life. How would i confirm this? I could phone previous owners?

Would Audi themselves know from the VIN number if an engine would be swapped under warranty in japan? but then why install a BEX?

So thats confirmed then for you, AMB was the original engine but now has a BEX.
a Bex engine was probably easier to source so they slipped that one in..

Whats you Log book say? look under section D2 (model type) - you should see 6 digits...it will prob say something like *AMB**....or if the change is recorded with DVLA then it should have BEX in there somewhere.

D2 says: A4 only

even engine numbers says: NOT KNOWN

im a little worried now, hope its all legit! it hpi'd clear when i bought it.

That could be something to do with the Import sides of things then...all log books state the engine code etc so im guessing after all the Import sides of things and the engine swap there needs to be a gap filled...
I can see where you coming from with being worried, id be the same.
Can you trace back to the first owner over here?(you mentioned the lady on school runs) or was it imported before her do you know?
Did you get any paperwork with your history to say who imported it? Audi or private?

I phoned the original owner (uk owner) before and he knew nothing of an engine swap. He bought the car for his wife to do school runs, he mates wife then had the car, again for school runs, then the owner i bought it from was in his 40's and he didnt strike me as the type to mess about with cars, he seemed genuine and honest. Again all HPI'd clear.

I have emails from and audi-export site in germay so i emailed them before asking about any possible warranty work.

I bought the car early last year and have only just discovered the engine situation!

Now knowing about the engine, is it fine with a 5 speed tiptronic, plus is it likely to be outputing 190bhp or could the engine be downgraded somehow to meet original spec?

Its all in the ECU so you prob running sport 163/150 spec.Hard to say.Im not really clued up with these side of things but im sure there will be someone come along and shed more light on that side.

The 5speed TT is ok and Im guessing it drives ok with no faults etc?
I wouldnt worry too much as its been floating around for a while now with this engine in and its gave you no stress...apart from now.

Just make sure you notify DVLA on the details and they will send you a new Logbook with the correct details on.I have heard that sometimes they like you to take it to your nearest DVLA center for an inspection though...

The Old engine went POP so before it came over here it had an engine replacement Im guessing so all that need to be done is the correction of papaerwork. It should have the AMB on the Logbook but hasnt so maybe DVLA was notified.Weird how it states nothing though because I would say they would have gave whoever a new V5 with the corrected details.
Again, Importing/exporting motors Im in the dark with so dont know any of the procedures.

Maybe the owner (in his 40's) did the swap maybe???

...or maybe just had a new Head?????

Maybe knowing the number on the actual block will help more

which numer do you want?

Thanks for the help also.

just phoned the previous owner (40's) and he knew nothing of an engine swap.
In the service book there is a delivery inspection stamp around the time of importation from crewe audi, so i will give them a try.

Dont know whether the head was just changed and has the original block if thats possible.
Atleast you can speak to crewe Audi tomorrow and hopefully they can clear things up more...
The delivery inspection records might give you details of the spec at the time of importing.
Keep us posted!!

Slightly off the subject but still on imports. I have notice my VIN states the car is 2004, yet on the v5, first date of registration is oct 2003. The plate on the car is 53. Is that normal?

Yes I would say that is normal. The VIN refers to the model year, towards the end of the year the new models come out and are available to register. Mine is a 2003 model year, registered in 2002 with a 52 plate.

The sticker in the engine bay ( on the driver side strut housing) should have the engine code as well.

It was probably just a head change, mine says I have a BAM now ;)

If its dirving fine I wouldnt be too worried.

Chances are if it was a head change the stock turbo etc. is still there so its running the way it should.

Im not sure you can tell if the bottom end is original or not though...

if it's got 1 intercooler, then even if they put an entire 190PS engine in there, they would have mapped it to 150-160-odd....

the 1.8 20V engines are largely the same from the 140bhp (N/A mk4 golf GTI) to the TT 225bhp: higher models get different injectors and turbo's and after that it's uprated intercoolers, gearboxes, clutches, etc... the "big lump of metal" stays the same.

there's one other model that has dual intercoolers ;) (mine)

Not necessarily.

They could have put a complete 190 engine in plus the ECU but not extra intercooler to add in.

Wouldnt say that the case though :)

My moneys on head swap.
