Hi guys,

wondering if anyone out there can help or offer some advice on a problem that's driving me up the wall! The car is an A6 Allroad on a 05 plate - its a limited edition 2.5L TDI with around 73k miles on it. Up to recently it's always been serviced by Audi and never ever given any problems at all. Owned from new and used on local trips as well as longer trips into France. Always been a case of not thinking about it - you just get in it and go.

If there was any issue at all, it was that occasionally the car wouldn't start on the button and took a couple of turnovers before starting, but nothing to cause any concern.

At the NEC in November last year, the car was parked up but on the Saturday night when leaving to go back to the hotel the car failed to start. The engine turned over very quickly and when it finally started, there were clouds of smoke and the engine was running extremely roughly and most of the warning lights on the dash came on.

The car was recovered to the local Audi dealer (Newbury) who started to look at it. I had thought injector pump and audi quoted 2,700 to fit, plus they advised a cambelt change at the same time at a further 600 quid! The car was then taken to our local garage, who confirmed they would look to repair the pump if possible and not just replace. All work was completed by them with a reconditioned pump directly from Bosch including cambelt change for just over 2k.

The car starts from cold on the button everytime, irrespective of how cold it is outside. It runs fine once started. The problem is that oncethe car has been run and then you try and restart it when it's warm. The glowplug light stays on for about a second and goes out. Starting then takes a long time and will only start with foot flat on the floor. Again, once started it runs fine.

There are no fault codes, but it seems to me that there is a setting for warmup time of the glowplugs on anything other than cold is set too short, unless there's some other problem. The garage is out of ideas and don't seem to be able to get any sense out of Audi - and in the meantime I'm pulling my hair out!!

Any advice gratefully received.

Cheers

Darren

I'm wondering if it might be the Cats - if they were collapsing would they create that sort of problem - anyone?

Dynamic pump timing? Also you wouldn't get a recon Pump direct from Bosch as they only produce new units, a specialist may have overhauled it though?

How is the dynamic timing ? Also, how is the condition of the camshafts ? I do hope for you that your motor isnt on Longlife service intervals wich will explain camshaft wear and hard starts when engine warm. How far are you from N. London ? I could have a look at your car if within reasonable distance...

Hi Kunit, thanks for coming back to me - I'm hoping that the timing was set up correctly when they put it back together. Sorry, it was a new unit from Bosch, just a lot cheaper than getting it through Audi! I know the car had to go back to the Audi dealership for them to 'synch' the new pump to the car, or I'm guessing it was that? Apparently it was all ok then?

Audi would have had to code it to the immob and ecu for the vehicle to be able to run, you'd need to see on the invoice or ask whoever did the job if this was carried out. Could probably be checked if in spec with vag com but I know nothing about it as I use 5051.

- Hi Adam,

No idea on camshaft condition - unless they're prone to wearing, I'm guessing that as it's been regularly serviced and it's lowish mileage for a 5 year old car. The starting problems have only happened since the pump failed - before that, there was no problem at all. Where North London are you - I'm halfway between Newbury & Basingstoke.

That would make sense - the garage checked for error codes when I took the car back and nothing doing. Is there a warm start setting that could be wrong?

Most probably when they changed timing belt they did not set proper dynamic timing which at 80degC should be in range 2deg BTDC - 2deg ATDC. Connect VCDS and check....

Hi Etronic,

Thanks for that - passed on info to garage and waiting call to get car back in again to be checked. Will keep you posted.

Thanks guys to everyone who helped - got the car back last week from the garage - it now starts properly and runs a lot better too - it transpires that it was the dynamic tuning was out, which was supposed to be sorted out by Audi when it was in. It's still not 100% but it's a helluva lot better than it was!

Cheers All!
