Quick question guys: my S3 steering rack is leaking near the driver side boot/gaiter so it obviously needs replacing.

My question is, what would be the part number for a 2001 AMK facelift? I've heard so much conflicting information. Also is the steering rack the same as the one in the 225 TT or the A3 1.8TQS?

Audi want something ridiculous for it so I'm just going to source it from a breakers yard or get a refurbed one.

i think all the a3 tt s3 steering racks from the same year/chassis are the same just the 2wd ones have a bracket to hold the gear linkgage i think, i read it from other threads but i might be wrong. mike

Thanks Mike. That's what I've been told, that the 2WD racks can be fitted with a little bit of modifying. I can't be ***** with all that, so I'm just going to get one from a 225 TT and hope it fits!

they're not all exactly the same, although they are all interchangeable.

TT/S3/LCR racks are MUCH quicker, with 2.5 turns lock to lock instead of 3.5 turns. if you fitted a FWD rack, it'd feel really rather awful, and your steering would be WAY lighter too.

I recently fitted a 225 TT rack to my fwd A3 as a quick rack upgrade, and the difference it's made is amazing. it was also a straight swap

Fairly easy swap too :)

If a TT 225 rack fitted onto your FWD A3 then I imagine it should be OK for an S3, and yes the rack is meant to be much quicker on the quattro's so that's why I'm going to avoid the FWD ones.

Prawn, how long did it take to change the rack over?

Be careful fitting an S3 / 225TT rack to an A3, I know it's been done a lot by the golf boys, however there is an extra 'cooling' loop in the power steering circuit on the S3 over the A3 and I'm guessing Audi put it there for a reason.
