Newish to forums - long time lurker and all that....loving da :blackrs4:

Audi A3 1.8 2002 auto - since it has become colder - will turnover and stall straight away in cold unless I have foot on gas pedal.... once warm - will start and not stall - straight away every time.
Has been VAG com - no codes showing. Searching the forums - I am thinking thermostat and temp sensor (would these not show up on VAG)- anything else? Really cannot afford to swap a lot of parts... thanks for help.

Those should show up on Vagcom if they are faulty, so it could be something else thats causing the problem.

Sorry cant really help more than that, but just wanted to say, I love your username!! :)

Thanks - should add - there was a massive break in a breather pipe which was replaced - this has helped performance but its the cold starting which is kinda offputting

Have you done a search on here, im sure it will bring something up which may help you.

I've had a very similar problem, turned out to be a vac leak. Does it idle a bit funny as well?

Other causes on the S3 (engine dependant - APY only) are the N112 valve and Secondary Air Input (SAI) system. This is designed to aid cold start.

Any other symptoms?

Nilz: Yes I have searched - most point to thermostat /temp sensor and also possibly coolant switch. Like I say would VAG have not picked up on these....And really dont want to get in habit of swapping everything unnecessarily.

Welly :There was a massive leak on breather pipe which was replaced - idles funny sometimes like needle flutters and vibrates which sounds like flywheel but really cant afford to do that 1st.

Hmmm, are you absolutely sure that there are no more vac leaks on idle? It may be worth replacing the hoses, silicone hose is cheap enough so its worth a try.

Also, the CTS can be replaced for a cheap one from eBay just to test, they're about 9 quid.

Just to update - had the temp sender replaced this week which I am told is the same as coolant sensor :uhm: - is this true? its made no difference am at a lost now. Vag com still showing no errors - any ideas

Im guessing a leak somewhere. I had a hose connected to nothing and my mechanic said itll cause problems when it gets cold. and ive got another split to but thats wrapped up in tape atm :)
