Been informed that my Crankshaft Seal is leaking oil. Is this a common problem for an 00 S4? How difficult for a normal mechanic to change this part. Does it require the removal of the whole engine to get to the clutch. If it does, then i am willing to splash out on a new Rs4 clutch even though there isn't anything wrong with the clutch but it has done 55K. Sorry if I sound like an idiot.

there will be two seals, a front one and a rear one. both will be an utter pain to sort out though

Mechanic told me its the rear seal.
So is it an engine/ clutch out jobby?

rear seal is at the flywheel end.

gearbox/clutch/flywheel off.

i expect thats tons of hassle on an s4

It is quite a common fault, but depending on the severity you should be able to live with it.

Mine has been weeping ever so slightly since owning the car (3 years). I've had the engine out 4 times for various reasons, and both Unit20 and MRC didn't think the rear seal was worth worrying about otherwise I would have had it done.

Obviously when I took it to Audi the week I got the car I was told it had to be done. Car is still here 20k+ later!

you are right Matt, it is the flywheel end. But my dilema is if I do go ahead with it, should I change the clutch while the eng is out.

It's not severe but the plastic cover/plate under the engine is a bit grubby. If I leave the car on the drive for a few days only a few drops of oil is evident.

i would if it was mine. its an old car now and will haev a lot of miles on it, the clutch will be due at some stage soon and id rather only pay the labour cost once

Personally, i'd ignore it until something broke, unless it was properly ******* out.

The labour for an engine pul buys a LOT of replacement oil!
