What do you people think, is it an option or not?

Comments, pics, opinions will hopefully make my mind up!

The trouble is, often the replacements can look cheapish and too tacky. The more expensive ones would be the best option e.g. Hella. However my personal opinion on a car like yours would be to just leave them stock.

Had light smoke tints on my S3 by Pentagon you cannot tell that it is not factory fitted really good. Would have again.

I think you should go for it. I had my done by a company called Pro Tint based in Leicester, but the guy came down to London to my mates workshop and carried out the work. I had 35% on the rear windows and 50% (which is very subtle) and the fronts.

I have medium smoke tints. Depending on the light and angle you are looking at the car, sometimes it looks dark, sometimes it looks quite light:

They are all illegal now in the UK, if applied in front of the B pillar.

Police have light meters and can issue on the spot fines + insist the tint is removed.

I was speaking with the owner of a large tint company in Scotland who confirm that even the lightest tint they do will fail an on the spot test...

The 'Bad Taste Police' have been issuing warnings for years...

Anything that takes a classy car and turns it into some drug dealer looking 'Huggy Bear' pimp mobile, should be banned on the spot.

I'm all for spot fines...Hell, I'd impound the cars and have them crushed soon after to prevent those of us with good taste from being repulsed by them on a daily basis.

I'd also make the owners parade about in an 'aligator' style posing pouch, for being so clinically stupid to have had it fitted in the first instance.

Pimp tints...right up there with the following is the 'stoopid stakes':

Chrome wing mirrors
Chrome wheels
Wheel spinners
Stupidly low cars
Excessively large and/or shiny wheels
Silly big exhaust pipes, or multiples thereof
Neons - of any lind
Afterburner / Lexus rear lights
LED number plate bolts / washer jets
De-locked doors
Re-located numberplates

NO, NO, NO...to them all.
Burn them all! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burningmad.gif

Of course you have forgotten to mention:

Removal of rear wiper (esp in North of Scotland Winter)
Single wiper conversions
Blow off valves
Talking alarm systems
and of course the "Veilside" Corsa Kit... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Aparently the JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) is now removing clear indicators and lexus lights and replacing them with OEM orange ones! Next they'll be running on 15" steel wheels, adding wipers and hiding the exhaust behind the valances. Spinners will soon be as popular as 3 spokes...

De-locked doors

Whats wrong with those ? Just clean the lines of the car up in my opinion ? Much better than some ground scrpaing fiberglasstastic bodykit as far as cosmetic enhancements go , wouldnt you say ?

They neither make the car go faster, nor handle better.. And when your battery goes flat due to the neons, subs and led washer jets, you won't be able to open the doors.

didnt say it would make it go faster or handle better , just dont see whats wrong with it ! thats all mate ! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif
Im sure there is at least one mod on your car that contributes to neither of the above ?

Jimbo, the reason it is wrong IMO is because it doesn't contribute to the drive of the car, it is just pure bling. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

de- locked, i think it looks alot better on car, just a smooth finesh, like people spray bottom half car jus 4 the smooth-ness
/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

david... driver experience.. ??

is that your car under your name... if so.. then you have optional wing mirrors, S4 wing mirrors as standard..

that would class as a none driver experience item

rear seats? i presume you have them.. if so that doesnt add to the driver experience...

i could go on..

basicly everyone has there own taste....

whats good to someone may be someones nightmare...

opinions are allowed.. so you have yours and we have ours.. simple really. now lets are sing "heal the world"

lol

No, wing mirrors are standard on the S3...

True, but you won't get an MOT without them...

Again, standard fit, but you are right, the few kg saved would be helpful, but where would I strap my crash helmet to on the way to the track?

Quite - I have often said this

...and this, and I'm quite happy that you pour scorn on my very bling mirrors and handling mods - with the ribbing I gave the bling list above, who can blame you. Its all in the fun...

OK, so I wouldn't fit the bits to my own car - but you are right - each to their own, but removing the rear wiper in the north of scotland... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh_roll.gif

See here for my "bling" motor in action, note in particular the use of the active aero pack (cunningly disguised by audi as an "electric sunroof")

I don't see anything wrong with doing something to a car that doesn't improve performance/handling. And i think millions of other people would agree as well. Yea neons/washer jets etc are VERY tacky, but de-locking/tints looks good on a lot of cars, just down to opinion. Not everyone takes their car to trackdays, and so the little improvements in performance aren't as important to a lot of people, and they would rather spend their money on making their car look better, i don't see anything wrong with it.

School boy error Rich!

The alloy mirrors are stronger and hence more resiliant to minor 'fending off knocks' at the hairpin at Knockhill...you can give the car alongside a little 'tap' to remind him you are coming through...the plastic ones are not up to this.

Also, cheaper to fit alloy mirrors (not those nasty polished / chrome things though) than to buy new Audi plastic covers and have them painted - when replacing cracked mirror covers used in the above listed overtaking procedure. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In many cases, some of these 'bling' mods actually detract from the driving experience:

No rear wiper = can't see the Police car coming after you on a wet day

Silly wide wheels = buff the tyres everywhere meaning you have to drive slower, or tramlining / aquaplane everywhere meaning you have to drive slower

Silly low cars = hit bump, crack sump, loose oil, wreck engine. Great plan!

De-locked doors - flat battery = no driving at all until you can work out how to get into your beast!

Stoopidly stiff suspension (often a by product of silly low suspension, it has to be said) = hit bump mid corner , enter field backwards , wreck pride and joy.

All wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong wrong. Crush them all! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burningmad.gif

Not wrong Glen ... just different , and i cant belive how you find delocked/handled doors as offensive as seeing as a3 with a fireglass veilside replica front bumper on it . Surely not even in the same league!

Oh but it is...
The standard handles are aesthetically pleasing and perfectly functional...why change / remove?

The less filler the better, in my view.

Aesthetically pleasing to you maybe ............. sh*t .. even anne widdecombe is attractive to some poor git out there , its all down to personal taste , and i prefer smooth clean lines.

Can I also add in huge spoilers that do indeed spoil the look of the car and probably add just extra drag and noise. I tend to agree with Glen except maybe delocked/handled where I dont think that they are bad, just not for me. I've nothing against cosmetic mods if they do indeed add to the vehicle but 95% off them dont especially generic bits that fit 'all cars'. I'd like a grill like JimboA3's whick I consided acceptable.

An so it goes on. The never ending debate between, performance and style (albeit differing tastes in style).

Each to there own. If someone likes big fat wheels, so let them!

If someone likes to have there car as a highly tuned/well set up cornering mean machine, fine let them!

There is nothing incorrect about either.

IMO (that old one, first time I've used this) The main deciding factory is what car tuning generation you are from.

Sorry to say but the older you are, the less likely you are to tinker with the looks of a car.

Just my observation from being on this forum for 18months. (scotSTHREE BTW, ****** of a computer has lost my password and AS.net have nver responded to my email, as usuall)

Thanks to all who posted their comments/pics to this thread /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif or aired their views /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh_roll.gif

Dispite the negative response to Styling mods, I think I will go for the tints, but only very light smoke.

Im all for trying to keep my S3 original, however this and Rs4's will be my limit.

Let the debate continue /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
