I have a fault on my car when accelerating hard past 50mph it brings on the abs/esp lights until the car is restarted.

ECU says it is the longitudanul sensor

according to the chap i bought it from (who is sending me a replacement sensor) he says there are 2 sensors one on each side of the cabin both exactly the same.

where exactly is are they both ?

Thanks
James

On my car, an 02 MY, that sensor is underneath the trim by your right knee when driving.

There are 2 sensors there, both the yaw rate and longitudanal.

I wasn't aware of one on the passenger side, but it could depend on the year of your car, as I believe there is also something called a 'combi-sensor' which replaced a previous setup.

What year is your car? I'll have a look on Elsawin?

Mate, if he knows all about it all, why not get him to tell you all about it? He has sold you a car with a known fault, why not take it back to him to sort out?
Its your business of course, it just makes me mad when traders or private buyers sell cars with known faults.

I had this sensor go on my TT.. it was located behind glovebox.. only a little thing..

Early cars had the Yaw sensor behind the glovebox. Later cars (facelift and later) had what Audi refer to as a combi sensor but in reality it's both sensors fitted on the same bracket attached to the steering column.
The longitudinal sensor or more correctly called 'lateral acceleration sensor' (G200) is the smaller of the 2 and comes in at under £100.
This a pic of mine :-

He told me when i bought the car a light had come up on teh dash and it hadnt happened since but if it did come up ring him and he would sort it out. (he didnt tell me what it was though and sort of made out he dindt know)

When it came up i got a chap to code read the ECU to tell me what was up and rang the dealer back who suddenly knew everything about it how much the sensors were and where they went.

The car is a Yreg 2001
The guy at the dealer has told me there are 2 sensors exactly the same part number cost £89 each and therte is one in each side of the car he is ordering me 2 in case the other one goes wrong. I agreed to fit them myself as it should be an easy job and it will be quicker than driving back up to manchester to get them.

He is messing me about a bit though i reckon cas i rang him earlier and he hasnt sorted anything out yet. I'll just have to leave it till next wednesday now which will make it 2 weeks in total.

Its just annoyiung cas i am dead paranoid about driving the car without ECS and ABS even though in reality i shouldnt be making either kick in.

The other one is located behind the glovebox on the S3 as well. Simply remove the glovebox and you will clearly see it. Very simple job to do.
Other one as mentioned earlier is located under the dash above the drivers knees. Remove the panel below and look up

Mate I think you are right to be concerned on both counts, one he is messing you about, (why did he not just give you the option of sourcing the parts locally and him re-imbursing you!) and also on the driving it front. You are right if you take it easy you should not see the lights, but what happens in an emergency or just regular crash, (god forbid!). If plod gets involved and there is any suspicion that there is a fault with the car, you could get yourself in loads of hot water!

if I were you I would consider writing to him giving him a decent period to send you the parts, but state that if it does not cure it you want him to pay for audi to sort it. Its a potential safety issue and as he clearly knows about it all.
Hopefully he is a decent chap and will send you the parts and that will cure it! But go v steady in the meantime!

another question i have asked about this on a nother forum and a guy on there is saying i will need to get the new sensor reprogrammed by a VAG dealer to put the correct values into the new sensor.

Have any of you fitted one of these sensors and if so was that the case for you ?

He is talking about the Steering angle sensor which does need calibrating but NOT in this case.

The G200 Lateral Acceleration Sensor is attached to the steering column as already mentioned. Unbolt, fit the new one and re-attach, job done.

Dont worry too much about the abs thing either mate, as you said it shouldnt matter anyway but i can brake far better with no abs in the audi than it can with it on. In the dry at least.

Just be that extra bit careful, but dont let him mess about he has a responsibility to sell you the car in the condition you accepted it, which wasnt with a fault.

Thanks for the help guys.

I have a Y reg 2001 does that mean i have 2 seperate sensors on opposite sides of the car or both on the same braket on the drivers side ?

update on this finally.

Sensors finally arrived today and the larger of the 2 is the wrong sensor, the smaller of the 2 was correct so i replaced it but its still bringing up the fault on the dash when accelerating hard.

I dont know which sensor is lateral and which is longitudanul.
which is which ?
and if I have replaced the correct sensor what do i have to do now to get rid of the fault ?

Thanks
James

The smaller of the two IS the lateral acceleration sensor (G200).

The larger one is the longitudinal acceleration sensor.

The lateral acceleration (smaller one) sensor faults usually manifest themselves by lighting the ESP light randomly until it eventually stays on all the time, simply replacing the sensor WILL cure this fault.

However, if your ESP light is ONLY coming on under hard acceleration then it would indicate that the longitudinal (larger) sensor is faulty.

it is longitudinal the ECU was read and that was the fault.

If i simply replace the bigger of the 2 sensors will it cure my fault or will it need to go to VAG COM to have the values for teh sensor reset ?

Right to confirm things for others for future reference.

The combi sensor pictured above is a YAW (larger sensor) and lateral acceleration sensor (smaller of the 2)

The longitudinal sensor is exactly the same as the lateral one and is fitted behind the glovebox, I replaced this one today and no longer have the issue i had.

Thanks
James

Thanks for the help in this thread - just replaced my lateral acceleration sensor and cured my traction control light problem.

Effect, call up the dealer and tell him you'll be taking it to a garage to get it fixed and they will be invoicing him directly if that would be easier or to fix it within 2 weeks. It annoys me too when dealers mess people around, a little persuasion is needed when dealing with these people. Same thing with the dealer I bought mine off. Good luck mate.

lol this was sorted quite a while ago bud, and i got my money off him dont worry. :)

Both sensors should be behind the glovebox - they are easy to replace and when I changed mine I did not need to reprogram them

Seeing as how the thread has been resurected already....

Can you someone confirm, for a 2001 Face Lift 1.8TQ, how many sensors and where they are

I think, from reading the above there are 3 sensors; 2 in the Combi under the S/T and 1 behind Glove box.

Glove Box = Longitudinal
Combi = Yaw sensor and lateral acceleration.

My issue is that the ESP/ traction control light comes on and stays on when simply driving sedately or even just sitting in traffic. I take this to most likey be the lat-acceleration sensor (smaller one) as part of the Combi under the S/T

Does what I've said above sound right?

Thanks
:)

I recently replaced my G200 (lateral acceleration sensor) and there were just the 2, the G200 and G202 (longitudinal sensor) under the steering wheel.

It has rectified the problem that you describe. It might be worth trying to zero the sensor first to make sure it hasn't just come out of electronic alignment. There is a guide for doing that on the Ross-Tech site somewhere

Sounds like a VAG.com exercise - if its not can you direct me to soemwhere that describes the procedure as I search Ross-Tech and only found instructions relating to VAG.com

Thanks

I have the abs and esp light come on now and then, got the codes read ahd this is what it said

01279 sensor for lengthwise accelerator, electrical not a plausible signal

What sensor is that?

Hazzarding a guess, but lengthwise sounds like another name for longitudinal.... kinda like when they covert those Chinese instruction manuals into English and it doesn't quite translate correctly.

But then I don't know if the longitudinal sensor is an acceletaion sensor like the Laterla one is... maybe someone with more knowledge (as I have none) would know.

:)

udi s3 8l 2001 facelift getting esp flash on then stay on every now and then... Which sensor would cause this? Heres a pic of my

Does you or anyone know if its likely the yaw sensor from the fault im gettin? And is it hard to change? Need resetting after? Thanks
