A3 tdi cambelt

my cars on 75,000 miles now and the cambelt needs doing.

audi and all my local garages are quoting £400-500

anyone come across any decent prices? especially in the south east?

or has anyone done it themselves? i done my 106 gti, and an old clio williams (which was a bitch by the way) wondered if they are any harder than usual on the a3 tdi's
 
lol, i know it needs doing asap!

id much rather be getting it remapped :(

I got mine done at 73k, it costed me £375 inc VAT. This also included the waterpump, otherwise it would've just been around £329 for just the cambelt.

Done at York Audi so got a dealer stamp! Not sure how much it would be down there but I reckon it should be similar.

Tried to get student discount but they wasn't having any of it! :(
 
Audi were doing an offer of £329 but i dont know if that offer is still on, but you could get it off the website and price match. I used a specialist cambelt company but thats here in Nottingham and they charged £210 but i am driving the much maligned by TDi heads, FSI sport lol

Mines was £300 inc £150 for parts, oil change, air filter and some other servicing items i cnat remember :S

yeah i saw the deal today, and my local garage are also offering it for £329, but was hoping someone might know someone in the south eastern area who was cheap!
 
For something like a cambelt change I'd want to go to Audi to do it. Just in case something goes wrong after then you've got more chance of getting things sorted.

Had my cambelt changed recently and it caused my engine mounts to start making funny nosies. Apparently this can happen when doing a cambelt change, but is no fault of the person doing the work (had this confirmed by a few independent mechanics).
Anyway, as a "goodwill gesture" Audi took my car back in, replaced the mounts, and only charged me for the parts, saving me a three hundred quid in labour.
And to be fair to them, I can feel the difference now that it's got new mounts, so I guess they were close to needing changing anyway.
 
Just spoken to my local Audi garage today to see if the special offer for cambelts is still on.

It is and they are quoting £329 for a cambelt change, but also recommended that the water pump be changed at the same time.

Is it neccessary to change the water pump too?
 
Do the water pump at the same time mate. I did.
It should only cost about an extra £60 as it is easy for them to do at same time as doing the belt, as most of the work has already been done.

If you don't do it, and the pump fails at a later date then you're going to have to fork out for loads of labour again as the belt will have to come back off.

Also read somewhere that once a belt is taken off it's not recommended the same one is put back on again, so again extra cost. Don't know how true that last bit is though.

Get the water pump changed as well :o.k:
 
The bloke who I bought mine off owned a prestige car garage so they did it included with the sale, it was at 65k.

Do you think they might do an Audi-Sport.net discount?
 
I called Hatfield Audi for a quote on a cambelt change and they quoted me £684!!!

So I called Bedford Audi who usually use (but lived closer 6 months ago) and they're still running the offer of £329 all in, thats the belt and the major tensioner (so don't know if that's a kit or not). They offer a free courtesy car or collection and drop back to you service - free of charge.

I opted for collection and drop back to my work in Stevenage (!) and they'll do it. Can't believe they're £355 cheaper with free collection than the Hatfield stealers.

Talking to Bedford Audi, they're a family run franchise who operate Huntingdon Audi as well (among others) - who seem to get praise a fair bit on here.
 
Well the website says one thing and the woman on the end of the phone giving out quotes is saying another. Maybe she should be pointed to the website ;)

Where did you get it done in the end?
Im in the same boat and phoned a few garages today. Audi offered £329 or £400+ inc waterpump. AmD surrey are nearer to me. My 2003 A3 TDI's done 69k and due a service and possibly a cambelt change, although Audi said today its due at 80k miles or older than 5 years, which it is so may need doing.
 
I paid the same (£329) for the Cambelt replacement at Sheffield Audi. I had some other stuff done too (Service & Turbo seals and pipe replacement).

My only concern is that since having this work done the MPG reported by DIS has dropped massively. I could easily get 45-50 MPG before and now I'm struggling to get above 40. Is this a known problem? Or could there be something else wrong? I've been meaning to ring the garage back and ask them but I'm scared that I'll get faced with another £800 bill!

The cars done little over 68k and will be 5 years old in March (2010). If anyone has any advise it woudl be greatfully recieved.
 
For some strange reason, well 3 people i know of including me after have our camblets done on our Audis, the first few hundred miles the car felt a bit tighter and we were getting slightly lower mpg than previous, but it could settle down later.
 
yeah the engine does feel much tighter now almost like new. But then it pulls better too bcos of the turbo pipes being changes. So it could be a mix of both. I've done about 300 miles since I had the work done so I would have hoped it would have settled down by now. I'm driving to Mid Wales for Xmas so I'll get to see it properly on the motorways then. My drive to work is small A/B roads and dual carriageways so not the best. Thanks for the post.
