hi all just wanting a bit of help on deciding which engine to go for in my first Audi

i did want the 2.5 tdi quattro but is little out my price range now!!!

so have been looking at the 1.8T and the 2.0 fsi

so whats the pro's and cons of these engines best out the two in terms of reliablity servicing costs etc etc

im looking at getting a 2001 - 2003 model so im expecting a few thousand miles on the clock already but want something that will last a fair while

any info apreciated

thanks stu

Hi, not sure about the 2.0fsi but I've owned a 51 plate 1.8T for about 6 months now and so far it been great. Its the 150bhp model later changed to 163bhp. The power is ok standard but just had a revo trial map fitted and its a different car now....not looking forward to it going back to standard
Problems I found with mine where 1 week after buying it the oil pressure warning light flashed up once, after doing research its a common sludge issue and the pickup pipe gets blocked in the sump. I had to remove the sump and give everything a good cleaning, new oil & filter etc. - but since then no problem. I guess as long as the car has been serviced regular with correct spec oil then it should be fine.

I have the SE model which for a standard car is very well equipped but probably would prefer the sport or s-line for better seats/styling etc.
Hope this helps

thanks for that it has helped a lot

i have seen a nice 2001 Y plate 1.8T sport that i like the look of

but also seen a lot of 2.0 for good prices lower milage and younger!!!

i hate trying to decide on a car :banghead:

Forgot to mention mines done 100k and sounds perfect so I'm sure its got a lot more life it in.

i have heard of a few near where i live running at over 200k on the clock with no problems

Yeah when I was looking I found that the 2.0fsi where going cheap but if you want the opportunity to mod the engine then the 1.8 T imo is the engine to have. I think i'd find the 2.0 a little bit lifeless. But I suppose its just depends what your after.

wether it's for economy / power / fun... the 1.8T is the one to have....

And also for high mileage and long-life, the 1.8T's have forged pistons and are well known to last years and years.

Only thing really against the 1.8T is that it might cost you more if the turbo's need replacing and it's more likely to have been ragged due to the owner profile.... that said - it'll handle regular ragging better than a 2.0!

The only reason for going for a 2.0 is if you just want something for pootling around your local area and you're really on a budget.

For tuning, it's a no brainer.... 1.8T all the way!

I've now had both the 2.0FSi and the 1.8TSE which i am in now. My own opinion is that the 1.8T is the way to go the 2.0 i felt was far too sluggish and had no poke. The 1.8T has he grin factor all the way. If you buy the 2.0 you may end up looking for a 1.8T a few months down the line.

Cheers,

Andy

I personally have to give it up to the 1.8T. I have the 163whp version and I am simply more than pleased with the power that it puts out. It has a nice power band, sounds smooth like a ****** off kitten and is considerably fuel efficient at cruising speeds. Plus, the turbo really helps out, despite its small size. When you hear that turbo kick in, you feel an excitement you only get with a turbo!

It has been said that the 1.8T has the common problem of suffering engine sludge, and this based on the interval set by VAG (Volkswagon Audi Group). This interval is 7,500 miles / 12,000 km and this is just too high. Even with a pure synthetic, it simply will not last that long without suffering a change in its chemical make up to make the dirty sludge. After all, the turbo makes the oil extremely hot. No, 3,500 miles / 5,600 km is a perfectly acceptable interval because its quick enough to avoid sludge build up, and long enough not to be tedious.

I use Valvoline Synpower 5W-40 and I highly prefer/recommend it over Castrol Syntech because it is a higher quality synthetic oil. Castrol Syntech is in a classification known as Group III. These are known as hydrowaxes and are a low quality synthetic oil. Hydrowaxes are cheaper to manufacture, and below PAO (PolyAlphaOlefin) stock. Since they are derived from a crude oil base stocks, they are not a true synthetic oil.

Valvoline Synpower, on the other hand, is in the Group IV classification. These PAO base stocks give you much better viscosity characteristics, lower operating temperatures, and have more resistance to oxidation. They are not derived from a crude oil base stock, and therefore a more pure synthetic oil. Other popular brands in this group include Amsoil and Mobil-1.

Had the 1.8T in my old Seat LCR, and it was amazing. Coil packs are an issue but only cost 30quid to replace, i have mine remapped to 250bhp and 277torque and never had a problem with it ,make sure the Cambelt and water pumps have been replaced as per the service intervals though.
18th months with mine an it was a dream to drive, and even with the remap i was seeing 30mpg on a long run. Go for the 1.8T IMO, great lump.
