Hi,
I have a 1.8t (APU) with a k04-15 which has the original fuel pump. The other day i put my foot down going up a hill just after the low fuel light had come on. There was a loud rattle noise and loss of power. I have filled up with fuel and it still goes very well low down but 4th gear has gone sluggish and at full throttle the rattle comes back. Does this sound like the pump has gone? I guess it was running flat out since the turbo upgrade (i was told by the guy that mapped it that it would be ok on standard pump, Maf and injectors). Do i get a pump from an S4?

Thanks for any help.

I assume the rattle is from the back under the rear seats.

If it's from under the bonnet it could be pinking due to poor quality fuel and then backing the timing off to compansate, that will lower the power.

Std pump will be fine for a mapped k04. Much more than that could bebefit from a larger pump or an OEM pump with an inline unit

Thanks,
When it rattles, its such a bad noise that i throttle back straight away, so i havent had a feel for where its from. it was running great until i ran it low on fuel and its been not right since.

I would be looking at getting the fuel fitler changed and maybe the injectors cleaned, it sounds like its pinking under load due to a lean condition?

tbh if it was pinking loud enough that you could hear it and think "**** thats a loud noise" you;d probably have speed holes in your pistons already....

Pinking i think sounds a bit like a crackling noise as opposed to a rattle.

if your pump is fecked it will be continuous, not just when putting your foot down.
need to locate noise, get a mate to sit in the back seat and try and do it again.

does the noise come on at a certain rev range or just at full throttle?
describe the rattle. tinny? don't want to be an **** but have a good butchers under and in the engine bay for any heat shields that could be loose.
Loss of power may not be linked (then again it may...) worth eliminating. I had a similar problem at around 5500k rpm.

thanks,
I will try and locate the noise but the problem is that my daily drive is mostly 30 and 40mph areas and the rattle comes in high up in 4th, so probably double that speed. I did try to get my wife to listen but she just screamed that i was going too fast!
as i said before, it was a single moment that caused the problems, i thought i had killed it by putting my foot down up this hill with low fuel. just a loud rattle like nuts and bolts in a can and sudden loss of power. its still feels just as quick in 2nd and even spun the wheels up in 3rd when the roads got wet the other day, so i cant see how it could be knackered but it feels more down in 4th and rattles full throttle in 4th.
