Ok... so time is pushing on and I've moved from my Audi A3 2.0 TDi (170 PS) to my now Audi A4 2.0 TDI (140 PS) SE Avant and so far I like it. Sounds like a step down? I hope not in the eyes of others.

Has done 70k miles and is in very good conditon.

Just need a little help or a link about VIN codes for these types of model and exactly what chassis I have. Can anyone please direct me? Thinking of what retro fits are available / worth doing.

Thanks.

Hi Benny

Definitely not a step down in my opinion!

This tool HERE lets you decode the option codes from the VIN sticker.

Lots of retrofits are possible, off the top of my head RNS-e and RS4 arb are probably the most popular ;)

nah get it remapped (my votes for Motech peformance) and your back up to 170 and have a very smmoooooth engine.

loads of retro fits, im slowly adding to mine..so far;

DIS, Fan washer jets, B8 rear wiper, RS4 rear ant roll bar, but got a few more planned.

how much was the remap to 170? I'm looking at buying an avant, and while the 170 s Line's are temping they are commanding a too higher price!

Thanks quatrojames and M7R for your replies,

M7R I know what you mean. I can feel (and I guess I miss) the pulling away power of having 170 PS. 30 bhp doesn't sound much but lets just say when it comes to making a quick move off from 0-mph you can feel the car not giving the "juice" you were once accustomed to. But part of me thinks maybe that's perhaps just the way it rolls for now. Also I just got the car from an Audi Approved Used Car Dealer yesterday, and so have the warantee etc. and don't want to invalidate it in any way.... Unless of course the garage can do the 140 to 170 thing.

Is this something you have to do on the quiet?
(Sounds like a dumb question, but I'm getting to that age where I'll ask anyway).

P.S. Have to say... I l-u-u-u-u-r-r-r-r-v-v-v-e Cruise Control. :yahoo:
Didn't have that in the A3, plus the MPG is higher in the A4... ideal for these days of 107p/ltr prices.:eyebrows:

Quattrojames,

A very good site. I never knew people could get this much info. :hi:Thank you.
You have made me stumble across something (perhaps for a different forum). I have included in my Audi A4 the code:

6XD = Exterior mirrors: electrically adjustable/heated

But this (cold) morning before setting off as the engine was idling I didn't see any steam coming off the mirrors. On the A4 do they only activate when you put the rear windscreen heater on? I know on the A3 they came on automatically.

Cheers.

rear view mirrors only heat with the rear window heater on...so thats why they didnt steam.

on the speed thing, dont forget the A3 is a fair few hundred kg lighter than a A4! so even a 140bhp A3 will feel faster, a A4 kerb wieght is about 1600kg..so you are at a double dis-advantage over the A3, less power and more wieght,

the Map from mike was £250 but I got mine on offer, I think they are back up to £300 now, but worth every penny!!!!! (oh and because of how they are mapped, ie only the fuel maps are changed, nothing else the ECU doesnt count it as a flash...so the dealer will never know :rockwoot: the only issue is if they for some reason re-map the car them selfs when it goes for a service, but very very very unlikley!!!!!)

oh and the remaps well worth it... at gti internation this summer my avant with a full tank or fuel and boot full of camping gear eat was still doing 0-60 in 8.4 and 1/4 mile in 16.4 :eyebrows: not too shabby for something tipping the scales at about 1700kg....

Many thanks again M7R.

I thought so. As we drove the condensation vanished. In the A3 it was automatic. Cheers for clearing that up. It's the getting used to the subtle differences.

hi i am new to remapping or chipped cars... i am thinking bout getting my car chipped. Is it really benefical in power speed and fuel consumption. I got a turbo diesel.. How would it gain my performance. And what are the down effects if there is any.. I was once given a quote £300 from Evoluton chips...Are they good and anyone ever used there remapping chips b4.. Let me know and clear the air .

. . . . . . .so you are at a double dis-advantage over the A3, less power and more wieght . . . . .

M7R,

Just a thought.... with a bit more weight, do you reckon the A4 would hold the road better than the A3? (Understood that it may not be as fast). Thinking about things like cornering etc.

erm.... loads of factors to take into account, inc the fact your A4 is a SE so it sits higher than a S line A4 by 20mm and the shocks are softer for comfort on a SE, again not as good for handling....plus the rear anti roll bar is skinnier... but for the rear arb chnage it to a RS4 one. that will massively improve the road holding without making the ride any harsher, esp on a SE.. plus there is tyres (compound, tread pattern, and size ie my big 235 wide 18s will give a bigger foot print than some 205s on a 16 inch rim so more grip, if the compound and tread patterns kept constant)

also wieght is not good for cornering, esp wieght high up as this will cause the car to roll more due to higher centre of gravity... my mk1 is a light wieght but with a low centre of gravity it still corners like on rails on the track.

M7R,

Thanks.. you've just confirmed that I'm definitely getting old.
Such is life. Love the car so far. My intention is to keep this one and run it into the ground. Next stop.... iPod dock.

Early Happy Bithday wishes to you M7R. I'm currently 3 years away from the supposed mid-life crisis (aka. 37 yrs. The Harley's parked round the back of the garage, ready for that "It's just something I gotta do" speech to my wife... :thrashi:(joke!) Nyaahh.... the A4's more than good enough).
