Hello

I have just purchased a 54 plate 2.0TDi A3 with 59k on the clock with full Audi History and am after some help please ?

The car has Auto Headlamps so would the car have rain sensitive wipers, how can I tell for sure without waiting for some rain ?

When I apply the handbrake it squeeks, is this just a case of needing some lubrication ?

I have noticed that when trying to start the car when it is warm it doesn't want to start on the key after the glow plug lights have gone out and has to turn over a couple of times before it starts ? It appears to be ok when the engine is cold, from what I have read could this be something to do with the coolant temperature sensor ? I have no warnings or lights on the dash. Is it possible to disconnect the sensor and if so where exactly is it in the engine bay ?
Could there be another problem ?

Is there anything to watch out for with these cars ?

Thanks in advance.

Dave

wee have no problem waiting for rain here in ireland it hasent stoped . get your watering can out and try it on your window lol :nyah:

Hi Dave

Rain sensors, check on the windscreen where the mirror sticks to the screen & see if there's a small cut out in the sun band across top of screen where a sensor would sit between back of mirror fixing & the screen, you should see a sensor which may resemble an LED sitting there, what you can do is stick your wipers on the 1st position which is auto & then tap the sensor or get a hose pipe & see if they turn on, with more pressure from increased water they should go faster if the sensor is there.

Where does the handbrake squeak, inside around the plastic trim near handbrake or external on the cable etc linkage?

Starting issue, I would get it diagnosed with vagcom to see any codes have been flagged as this might point you towards the issue at hand so you know which sensor is an issue, when it started are the fans on full thottle all the time, is the temp display in dash at 90 all the time or less when its warmed up that is, where are you based as there are number of members with vagcom that would do a scan for you.

There have been issues with heads cracking but dont read into this to much unless your coolant is dropping daily, but overall good cars.

Thanks I will have a look this afternoon. The handbrake is squeaking inside around the plastic trim. I don't believe that the fans are on full throttle and from cold the temp display will rise normally up to 90 degrees as the car warms up.
I am based in Stround if anyone is prepared to scan my car with vagcom that would be great.

Is there any particular batch of heads that are cracking ?

thanks

Have a look on the 8P main page in the stickys. You'll find a thread there that helps you identify the chances of your head cracking.
Not sure how accurate or reliable those findings are but you could still have a butchers.

Have just looked at the sticky on the main page and checked my engine number as it falls into the nearly all cracked section. What should I do, should I start worrying ? Is there anywhere I can get more information about this ?

Thanks

Had the car scanned today and it came back a faulty fuel temperature sensor being an open circuit. I replaced the sensor but am having the same problem and there are no other errors stored in the ecu.

Can anyone help or are all 2.0 tdi's like this ?

My '04 tdi does exactly the same thing.

When cold all it needs is a touch to start, but when it reaches normal working temperature and I stop the engine and wanna go again while it's still warm, then it does a few turns before starting.

I think it has to do with the higher amount of mixture given to the engine when it's cold.

Cannot find the source, unfortunately.

Hope this helps.

Thinking about it, this used to happen with my Peugeot 206 GTi.
Starting from cold was immediate, but starting from warm took a few turns before it started.
Come to think of it, I'm sure this used to happen with the vauxhall I had before that.

Haven't noticed it with the A3 yet, although that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Thanks for your reply's. I think for the sake of £30 I will change the coolant temperature anyways and see if that makes any difference. Can anybody tell me exactly where it is located on the 2.0 tdi engine ? Can anybody post up a picture as would be most grateful.
thanks

Have changed the coolant sensor and has made no difference! Any other ideas lol ?

Could the engine speed sensor be at fault or is this just a heat releated problem or has anyone found a cure for a poor hot start ?

Only worry if you notice your coolant is dropping quickly, just keep a weekly eye on it & temps but dont be too worried unless you notice anyother issues mate.

Engine speed sensor, cant see it tbh, its an ignition problem as its not starting, so have to look at the components involved with this, I'll have a dig around to see if anything crops up, try some wynns egr3 intake cleaner & diesel power 3 injection cleaner from wynns as this could help & its not to much either, less than your sensors or even one.

I will have a look for those, can they be purchased from somewhere like halfords ? The car is ok when it's cold so do you think these products might help the hot start ? If you do dig anything up that would be great :)
thanks

Hey it certainly wont hurt & might clean out some crap that otherwise might be effecting overall, try halfords or online mate, there maybe £20 in total delivered, saw egr3 on ebay for £10 delivered, wish italy was that cheap.

Updates Dave?

My poor hot starting was down to my starter motor, replaced and all was good again.

Thanks Dave, yes it is possible the heat of the gearbox is transferring to the housing of the starter, thus affects the solenoid as in heatsoak, they did change parts at some point so seems maybe they found an issue with them, my tests continue for some research to task audi possibly as this issue has been going on since as far back as 92 on VAG cars, its a joke I tell yer
