Ive just fitted some Brembo's and im having some issues bleeding the brake system now. I just cant get the pedal to firm up, it goes pretty much straight to the floor. I suspect i may have run the abs pump dry so need to bleed the abs pump, i know this can be done with vagcom but the info on the rosstech site is not particularly comprehensive. The ross tech site says to just run group 001 but when looking at it on vag com it seems you should run group 001 and 002 and possibly more groups. Has anyone used vag com for brake bleeding and if so exactly how did you do it? Any help would be much appreciated as i really want to get my car off the axle stands and back on its wheels?

I've just fitted a new ABS pump and had to bleed the entire system inc master cylinder with a pressure bleeding kit, it took some time and plenty of fluid............But they work great now.

I had this problem with mine a few days ago bled them all starting at the back and went forward, It still went to the floor. then we read about the clutch needing to be done at the same time, but this was working fine . So we bled it again and they worked fine afterwards.

Didn't know that - learn something new every day!!

Steve, could also try over on the VAGCOM forum, there's also a link to the RossTech site which has got a slightly updated FAQ section - I assume you've got a registered version, why not ask RossTech themselves.

Cheers guys all sorted now. Ive got a pressure bleeder and had bled the system about four times but still couldnt get it right so thought i must have got air in the ABS pump. I was clearly having brain fade last night and had forgot to do the MC, got up this morning and realised what i'd missed bled the whole system again including the MC and the ABS and now its all good. The reason i was asking about the vag com method is that there is alot of variations on how to do this on the net, some even stating to use upto group 017, i used group 001 and 002 and left it at that (i clearly had got some air in the ABS pump as this method resulted in releasing alot more air from the system).

How did you go about bleeding the clutch?

Easy mate, i just connected up my pressure bleeder then bled it from the bleed nipple that is attatched onto the concentric slave cylinder. The clutch bleed nipple is on the top of the gearbox just above the starter motor.

Hello, old thread but I am having problems with the same things. I had to replace my abs pump unit since it seized to work properly. I bought a used unit and have now installed it. I have bled the system two times but still have soft feel of the pedal. My car is an a3 1.8 (non turbo) from 1996 and I have the mark 20 abs system.

I have not bled the clutch, but I do not understand how this could effect the brakes? The clutch only seems to take oil from the same reservoir and does not have any contact with the high pressure side of the brakes.

I ran the abs pump with vag com under advanced settings where you can check all outputs. But was this the wrong place? When you do brake bleeding with vag com, are you supposed to have any brake bleed nipples open or will running the pump only move air out to the reservoir? The test I ran also energized all the different valves one by one, is this necessary?

I have noticed that people talk about bleeding the master cylinder, but where do you find the brake nipple for this? Is the master cylinder different between the older and never models? I cannot find anyplace to bleed the master cylinder with!

Any tips?

The master cylinder is underneath where you put the fluid in have a look you should see the nipple easily and you normally have to bleed the clutch as well as i have on all the cars i have owned with hydraulic clutches as well as cars i worked on when i worked in a garage its on the same system so the air will get there too. As for vag com i dont know i have never done it. I hope this helps
