Usual quality :rock: mate speak to alex when you go down, he'll prob confirm you wont need to run any other cooler with this. It should cool fine just using this!! as i read someone said the forge one can retain the std one? just run this it will run better on its own..

no the forge cant retain the standard cooler, 1 member had 'forge' adapt a golf smic to fit in line with his FMIC'd S3 which was i beleive the test car.....he was running silly boost though

with the looks of that id say its probably no detriment leaving that smic on Westle..... surface area cant be much more that the replacing pipework that would replace it.......and fitting looks easier too

also tufty whats ya view on keeping the drivers smic from a fitting perspective...seeing as you have it in bits :D

Tim I think Tufty thought it was a bad move to keep the smic too:

Didn't think it did, I may look into it later if AIT's are still high but I am hoping this will be a one stop solution.

I know Glen (Ess_Three) used a modified golf sidemount but the bottom outlet on the OEM one makes for a tight turn, seems a lot of work for little gain.

Quick update as I am doing this from a mates computer and not had the time to look through all my pics...

I will sort out a proper write up and installation pics when I get home...

Car is feeling more consistant power wise but will get it properly logged and post up the AIT's etc later

<tuffty/>

Looks good. Nicely done.. did you have to cut away at any of the inside of the bumper?

Not yet... I still need to get the car up on ramps to have a look at the two screws on the bottom of the bumper as I think I need to see how far I am away from getting them in.

The pipes actually sit in the recess below the grille surround on the bumper which is why it fits so well.

I may need to do a little trimming of the centre grille once I get the car up to see whats what but everything fitted back as it should except the two screws.

<tuffty/>

cool man, just a word of warning, i just done mine and as i had to cut away at the bumper, it was on/off/on/off seeing where it was touching the cooler, dont push down on the bumper to see how close it is.. i bent a few fins on the cooler by mistake...:banghead:

looks really good though.. im gunna spray mine gloss black.. too much silver is showing through, doesnt suit my car.

Keep us updated, would like to see if you noticed a difference long term wise at all..

Excellent work.

Anyone up for a group buy in August or September? Apart from a catback exhaust, an FMIC is the only major mod I want to make to my S3. And yes, I know, we've tried to get one off the ground before, but thanks to tuffty, it looks like we have the core and pipework sorted and we know an approximate price. Surely we can get 5 people together?

Would it be worth me getting a fmic ion my a3 then, or is the turbo not under that much pressure to create heat soak. ? itll be mapped , not standard.

Yeah good plan but Someone will need to speak to Alex and agree something with him.

He should be set to make a tidy fortune out of these as we've been screaming out for someone to produce a fmic kit thats half the price of Forge's.

They certainley have all the packaging materials there, so i see no reason why not, also to add the unit itself is under 5KG so carriage would not make it prohibative in the slightest.

The design has been done to allow for sight adjustment up and down also to allow for different bumper shapes using spacers. The mounts are very well made and hold that bad boy solidly.

We found that by mounting the unit as low as possible was two fold, it allowed for better placement in the airflow and also allowed the pipework to fit under most of the grille mounting tabs safe out of the way whilst also keeping the pipework out of sight.Fitting this low allowed for the fogs to stay too without the pipes touching, or trimmage required.

It was a very elightening day, and Alex and Matt are both very nice, and extremly good at what they do. Also being actually based in the UK, customer service would be possible, and i dare say(heaven forbid) if you bumped the car and split the IC these guys have all the gear and knowledge to repair it for you.

Certainly made my Ebay FMIC look cheap and tacky i can tell you

Cheers mate. I think a lot of us on here are very grateful for the time, effort, and money you've put into all this :hi:

Agreed! I've been following this thread for a while now... So count me in if its the right price!

:)

Well im defo in for august time. Where is alex based?

I need to have a proper look and take the rest of the photos to show you guys all the info of whats involved.

The FMIC does touch the centre grille a bit but its not centred properly yet so I will make some tweaks before I do a full write up. That way you can see all the facts and make up your minds from as much info as I can push out.

Please note that Alex put this cooler together based only on telephone conversations and emails, my dimensions (gleaned from researching threads on this forum) and the Forge fitting diagram. In all fairness the cooler fits better than I (or Alex) expected and considering he didn't have an S3 there to offer the design up to while he built it, I think its turned out really well.

Its possible that the Forge item 'may' fit a little better and 'may' be more efficient with more power from a BT conversion but not £200 odd better... considering the the first time cooler and car came together was when he had actually built the thing, it all went very well indeed.

I am hoping to have a bit of time to get some more pics up tonight but I will be prepping for GTI tomorrow so won't be doing a full write up until next week.

Ok... just gave Alex a quick call... He will do the cooler for £250 + £15 delivery +VAT

You will need to source the pipes.

I think he will do that price all day long so its up to you if you want to contact him directly or put together a group buy type thread.

Anyone who is interested can PM me if they want and I'll compile a list. If the mods would prefer me to set up a separate thread to manage it rather than post on this one then by all means let me know.

I wouldn't say that in the open or you'll be lynched by the Forge dissenters;)

LOL, yeah... meh!!! Damned if you do etc innit!!

Point is, You can get a FMIC that will do the job at an (relatively) affordable price point without having to go chinese or Forge...

<tuffty/>

There may be a '15%' discount that can be applied too if you talk nicely to the man ;)

<tuffty/>

15% FTW. Think ill be opting for delivery, essex is a tad to far lol.

Its Hereford Dan!

I could potentially pick it up if the worst came to the worst. Doesn't look like I'll need to though!

I'm in for August, I'd prefer towards the end of August near payday, but I'm flexible.

FYI, my car will be on the ASN club stand tomorrow (only going Saturday) at GTI so feel free to have a look and ask Q's etc if I am about :)
