My 2005 A3 2.0tdi was towed to the garage this morning as it wouldn't start and the oil pressure warning light came on. The end result was the garage says it needs a new turbo which is going to cost about £1500!! ouch
Is this the going rate for a new turbo or am i being ripped off?
Ps the car has a Superchips Bluefin and has done 65K miles. The garage is the local VW dealership as the Audi dealership is too far away for the breakdown recovery.

Sounds pricey, most people i've heard have had a recon fitted for around £700-800

Shop about!

there's one on ebay for 350 check Audi a3 turbo ....12 month guarantee

1500 quid is a bit steep mate. You should be looking at a grad max if done at audi.

out of interest, did you drive home ok & it was only when you when to start it again that you had the problem, not when driving it that it packed in? Was there no warning signs. Does a blown turbo stop a car from starting?

that is steep!
the car would still work, a blown turbo usually causes smoke out the exhaust.

Thanks for the replies folks....Khufu...the car was working the day before no warning signs....got in the car the following morning and it wouldn't turn over and the oil pressure warning light came on.....eventually managed to get the car towed to nearest garage...no PAS meant it was a nightmare to recover. The VW main dealer garage says that the car will only start with the turbo disconnected???
The internet suggested that blown turbos are not uncommon in cars of a similar age or mileage, its just the way the fault appeared that concerns me....ie no white smoke, being unable to start car.....but my service records show new oil/turbo seals have been fitted, plus i have noticed oil leaks in the past.....me thinks this has help increasing wear in the turbo???
I appreciate DIY/refurbed turbos are cheaper but I'm no mechanic and getting an immobile car to another garage would be difficult.
All because i considered changing my car this week....she obviously dosen't want to go....ANYWHERE

Why wont the engine turn over if the turbo has blown ?

Mine does and the turbo is popped ?

Doesnt that mean the engine has seized due to low oil/low oil pressure or has the oil pressure sensor stopped the engine from starting?

im guessing the turbo has seized after he got home due to it still being hot but no oil getting pumped round it. With it being seized there will be little or no gas flow - like sticking a potato in the exhaust!

But would it not still turn over but not start?

Big Turbo...LOL no chance...Bluefin is enough otherwise my driving licence in danger!!

Kaz.....the engine would not turnover

Im not sure, depends if the air can be compressed enough between the chamber & the turbo. If no air is getting pumped out, none will be getting sucked in?

That makes sense - i really need to get my turbo off to see whats happened.

It turns over but i havent started it incase a bearing or something flys into the engine.

Thought I might have got lucky with the urbo not being blown as it starts but no such luck :(

Thanks for clearing it up

BTW mate - my turbo was £350 new (my garage got it me) and not got a fitting price but my garage are always cheaper than the rest (my dads mates so they look afer me)

Kaz....lucky you.....I didn't have that option...the local garage decided they couldn't fix it so suggested a main dealer...the only main dealer within the 10mile limit of the breakdown was the VW garage....... today I got a quote from the local Audi dealer 25miles away and it was again about £1500.
If you live in the Country like me your options are limited and more expensive....but the roads are quieter and there's fewer speed cameras!!!
