Apart from Mr Thomas Tom and his cousins, what can I get to go into the dash that a) looks right, b) sounds good, and c) DOESN'T MAKE ME SCREAM BLUE ****** MURDER AND ASK ME TO TURN LEFT INTO FIELDS AND STUFF

:keule::keule::keule:

*ahem!* anyway, I don't like it any more. And I don't like shouting at the dashboard, so any suggestions or ideas please guys, be very grateful

:hi:

I have no idea! It certainly looks nice...but so does the RNS-E, and it infuriates me :haha:

Considering an Alpine doo-dah, always been very satisfied with their stuff in the past

I've been eyeing up a Pioneer F900BT as an alternative.

It looks smart, but not too OTT. From what I've read it's a pretty solid unit now they have the initial problems ironed out.

I had one in my Ibiza, to be honest its massivly over priced, really slow to respond to comands & inputs, beeps everytime you press a button, the nav sends you all over the place & the paint was falling of the rotary dial after 4 months/3k miles.

I wouldnt be spending my money there

Cheers for the tip. Back to the drawingboard for me then....

mhill did you have the version 2.0 software?

The Avic F-900 can be had off ebay (from states) for around £400 + free shipping (within United States). I have relatives in US that can forward my 'gift' to me hopefully saving on duty, just paying shipping costs.

The Pioneer Avic F-series gets mixed reviews, but most with software version 2.0 have good things to say, also it has bluetooth and text to speech intergrated. Has a cheap rear view camera, cheap ipod connection, and fairly priced CAN BUS adapter.

I have been really considering one of these (Avic F-90BT) for a while now. I read Pioneer maybe releasing a Avic F-9100 which maybe worth waiting around for...

Just seen the F-700 on ebay for £325 form states, has no DVD drive but accepts SD card, and DVD can be added later (player in the boot, glove box etc).

I am sorry to hear you want to smash your RNS-E to lil itty bitty pieces hotbox :)

'tis a shame, but I like things to work right :meeting: will try not to break it for now, but I'm researching all alternatives - got to look nice/subtle, and work with all the standard stuff in the car...I'm guessing I may have to replace the bose gubbins at the same time  not a huge loss, except to my pockets of course. Or just tolerate the nonsense another 2 years and chop the car in for something else

I do like the A3 don't get me wrong but certain aspects of it make me want to buy a gun...

Why whats wrong with the RNS cause for me its not perfect but its pretty damn good overall, no unit is perfect but the look/integration with the car makes me forgoe any issues I may have with it

It's slow, and dumb. Maybe I drive too fast, and am also dumb

Seriously though, about 40% of the time she's insane, I do what she tells me then 5 minutes later she tells me to do a U-turn. Then turn left (into a field). Turn left. Turn left! ...Calculating

...Calculating

...Calculating

Make a U-turn when possible. Make a U-turn. Turn right into someone's house. Turn left in 300 metres...turn left 50 metres ago.

aaargh :nyah:

****** women! Even electronic ones

Feck me u only just discovered this about women & you actually believe what they say, lol

But I cant believe its that bad, never had an issue with the nav, are you driving some real back lanes or something

I assume you're using fairly up to date map discs, just curious as seriously never had that problem once

Maybe she's got the painters in mate, time of month........:undwech:

I wouldn't say back lanes really - but I do need a reliable-ish nav as I've only lived in the country 6 months and tend to travel to a few unfamiliar places for work...

My dad owned the car before me and he reckons the navigation in mine is better than the one in his current car, a hideously expensive AMG Merc...I find this hard to believe but sad if it's true!

About up-to-date map discs - I'm still using the presumably original disc that came with the car (it's a 2006). Would buying the new disc help matters? It's what I considered first of all but am reluctant to spend 200 quid on a DVD if I'm in a same or similar boat of frustration :noway:

I like the car but am a bit undecided - do I throw money at it so it annoys me less or tolerate its nonsense for 2 years...at which point I'm in a better position to either get a new car (maybe Audi but also maybe not) or a well-maintained 3-year old CLK63 rag-top at the end of its lease:meeting: I'm not a Mercedes person but V8 plus roar plus brain-buggering acceleration is pretty seductive...it's not the same as choosing one myself but a benefit of buying my old man's old cars is at least I know where they've been :eyebrows:

Anyway, new disc to start?

3 years old nav dvd's maybe a slight issue as they are updated with roads & corrections yearly, plus it also has 2 firmware updates since then aswell for the rns, patients maybe another, lol, you can get for cheaper than £200 mate & I have an 08 2 dvd set for sale if you want for less than £200, this is both dvd's not 1, so does east/west europe

I'd start with new dvd & no not cause I'm selling but honestly it might update it enough to correct road issues mate, PM if interested & this will update your rns to firmware 650, what version is yours now, go into IIRC Car then version.

& I'd have patients with the car & wait cause market hasnt bottomed yet mate, before looking at replacements, so try updating & see if any better.

Ok sir I just pressed some of the bitches' buttons...the information I gleaned from Car - Version was:

Map: P2N060922_EN0506
SW: 0500
HW: H72

None of which says Firmware 650 to me :search:

Anyway, you have PM

SW is firmware mate, yours is little behind the times, so 08 dvd's will bring you upto date SW 650 & also have updated maps, there are 09 dvd's now which are £180ish for dvd 1 or £260-£280 for both, they dont have any new firmware & from what I've seen not much different, 08 dvd's will get you 2 years or more along the line & I doubt there will be anymore firmware updates now given age of 8P, I'll reply to PM with price now mate.

Hey hotbox, keep us updated if you update the software... The RNS-E is one of the mods I am thinking of doing and would liek more feedback on how what it's like to use. I found myself near smashing a few of my previous factory nav's to bits after similar probs.

~RS~ : As far as user-friendliness goes I can't fault the RNS-E, after a few minutes familiarisation it's like second nature. I will be updating the firmware very soon and will keep you posted re developments. I just want a bit more accuracy and a bit less shouting :lmfao:

NHN : Top man, cheers. Replied!

My new, updated, spankly DVD's arrived in the post today :yahoo:

I am now running firmware 650, and the car didn't even catch fire while i was doing it :yahoo:

Big thanks to NHN, the man is recommended! Just after I sent him the money via paypal, about 5 minutes I swear, I went to email him to say I'd sent the money, and he'd already mailed me saying he was off down the post office :superman:

4 working days later they were on my desk in deutschland, no faulting that is there?

Now hopefully my navigation lady will lay off the drugs and stop trying to direct me into fields and peoples houses and asking me to pull u-turns on the motorway and crap like that! :drag:

Going to Berlin over the easter weekend with 'er indoors, that's about a 1000 miles round trip I reckon, on roads I don't know...test time

Updates will follow....:blackrs4:

P.S have I said yet the smileys on audi-sport.net are the best i've EVER seen?

:friends: :sex::detective2:

know what you mean.

i spend ages looking for the one i want , but cant find it, but then find one that i am sure wasnt there before........:meeting:

Would a VW MFD3 fit and work?

I'm guessing this is a no since no one has answered it - and when I look at the MFD3 its a different shape?

Shame really as the MFD3 is FAR superior to the RNS-E with its touch screen and built in HD.

I looked at the MFD3 in a car at the VW stealers - it does look a bit different! I have no idea if the unit itself would work but physically it would need a bit of bodywork I think :search:

Ah so someone else noticed the smileys move around - thought it was just me losing them all the time

I have another set of 08 DVD's for sale guys if anyone interested, these are genuine East & West Europe DVD's, Hotbox will velch for me I hope, lol

I'm not velching anyone young man! what do you take me for

But the DVD's are just the job, if you need to update your navigation and don't want to pay 300-odd quid, then I suggest you get them from NHN. Good deal  indeed :o.k:

Ok what did we agree on was it 20 or 25% comm, lol, thanks mate

Dont want to **** on your sale here but for £200 you can just get a TomTom. And it'll give you speed cameras, updated weekly. Looking at the TomTom map is a bit safer as well as you just look to the left a little and not down at the central console. I dont use my RNS-E at all.

Not even for music? :undwech:

Or phone ?

As an all round piece of kit (especially with the SDS functions enabled) the RNS-E is unbeatable in my opinion. Looks great and has never let me down. As JohnS3 is hinting at - the MP3 slots and the track details you get on screen make it fantastic for music.
TomTom wires hanging around near the gearstick makes the cabin a tatty place to be.

Couldnt agree more, why have wires hanging about everywhere if you already have rns, seems kinda silly to me.

I have got a nice tom tom here. Want to swap it for your rnse and a little bit of wonga. Shame for it to sit there and not be used...

Ok yes I use it for music and it does look good, was just saying I prefer to use my tomtom for directions. Horses for courses...

Well I can confirm the new version firmware did the trick. 900+ miles over the weekend and Miss Navigation didn't put a foot wrong.

For everyone who has an older 8p and navigational alzheimer's, I can thoroughly recommend first updating your firmware before stabbing your RNS-E to death. :yahoo:

Cheers again Nigel!

lmao wicked, thats made my day, lol
