After drivin my cousin's 1.0 Aygo for 5 mins the other day, I noticed how fun it was to drive compared to my 2.0 TDi. I always thought the steering was really light on the A3 and I tried searching for anything that would 'liven' up the steering a little.

I found this link http://uk-audis.net/forums/t/547.aspx on a thread here and just wondered has anyone else tried this?

you where driving a car a lot lighter. but that link does give for interesting reading. l would also like to know if any modded S3 owners have tried this to any effect.

alot of people have changed their steering setting via vagcom to the 'GTI' setting which the Mk5 Golf GTI has, makes a massive difference i believe, not been able to do it on mine as its got an older steering ECU.

I have checked the setting on my A3 and it was set to 8 which I have reduced to 6, which has made a fair difference.

I may try it a bit lower to see what it is like.

I'd love to know what setting the S3 has in comparason to the MKV GTI. You'd expect it to be the same but I swear it's much lighter (on the S3).

This wont work on post 07 cars. Audi changed something and the guys at RossTech haven't found a safe way to modify the steering settings.

Sorry ;(

hey it seems like you guys have been able to do it on older cars, for some reason i can't get to the setting on mine and mines a 05MY facelift, anyone know which i need to go into to change the setting? i'll have another go at it tomorrow.

Interesting, wonder with my module updates it will allow now

The procedure outlined in the link above should work for you. You need to be in the adaptation channels, not the module coding.
Taken from the link above >>>>>

Modify Steering Boost Setting: Note: This does not work on 2007 models. These instructions will be updated once somebody figures it out.
Follow 'Initial Steps', above, then...
  • Click on '44-Steering assist'
  • When you go into this module, it will scan for fault codes and go straight to a fault code screen. It should say 'No Fault Codes Found'. Click the 'Done, go back' button to get to the main screen for this module.
  • Click on 'Adaptation - 10'
  • Click on the 'Channel Number' "Up" Icon until it shows Channel 1
  • Click the 'Up' or 'Dn' buttons to get to a new value, don't just type it in. People report liking '0' (least boost) through '3' as new settings, I personally prefer '2'.
  • Click 'Save'
  • It may ask "Are you sure", click "Yes"
  • You may want to check again to make sure your new setting is showing up in the 'Stored Value' field, just to be sure.
  • Click 'Done, go back'
  • Click 'Close controller, Go Back'

A thread snip from vwvortex which may help :

Steering assist controllers that can be changed have a tell-tail K1.X or K1.XX (in the case of some early GTI/GLI models).
The K1.XXX controllers are the ones that are not adjustable.
The Values found for the adjustable controllers are anywhere from 0 through 12 depending on the car.

Well as I see most people find a big difference in changing the settings, I think I will too! If only I had VAGCOM...............

hint hint :whistle2:

Could have asked last week!!

I was in Leeds over the weekend! lol

I'm sure John will sort you out!

Can a dealer do this on post 2007 cars?

My car is booked in and they will give it a go but have never heard of it, even on pre 2007 cars.

Update, At the moment it can't be done on 2007+ cars. Had mine into Audi and there equipment cant access that feature and couldn't access it on earlier cars either.

I also emailed Ross-Tech and got this reply.

I am not aware of any way to adjust that steering level in any newer A3's. That Component field should indicate the Kl (Kennlinie) and only those with numbers lower that Kl.015 (early models) are adjustable. This is not a limitation in our software, this is a change that Audi made on the production line to prevent adjustment by either our software or by the factory scan tools.

Is this possible on an 8L lads?? Facelift model!

Very interesting post!

G
How light is it on the facelift? My old pre-facelift 8L steering felt much heavier than my current 8P. I kind of miss it, might have to get hold of vagcom or something.

Well, just got my steering adjusted thanks to JohnS3. It has made a massive difference! A lot better to drive and feels a lot safer. Anyways, it's definitely worth doing if you haven't done so! I was surprised that it was set to 10 when it came out the factory! But now it's down to 2!

i didnt know you could do this is it better to drive kaz .... fancy coding mine for me pretty please

No worries mate - Bell me and pop over on the weekend!

I think 4/5 will be good for you as your missus will be diriving it and she'll find it heavy - my mum finds mine heavy anyway and its on 3! lol

so does it make the steering heavy does it feel better is your heavy or light ?????

it makes it heavier as there's less boost/assist going to it...

so as theres less boost, you can feel more of the road.

I hated mine when i got it, could never feel the road but now, when the front end starts to oversteer, you can feel it quicker and correct it...

yours is a quattro so doubt you have this prob though!

Its not bad though, it is a bit heavy at times when parking and stuff but ok. Mines on 3 but my mum doesnt really like it. 4/5 is the best all rounder..

So will it be really stupid to change the steering module to a pre 07 one to have the steering resistance adjustable? Does anybody know if this change will affect any other functions?

It can be done, when I was searching about the forums on this topic someone has done it although they said it was a bit fiddly, but didnt effect any other parts of the car. The guy is lookin to change the steerng mounts as well to get more feel.

Anyone round Cheshire way who could tweak mine? Offering the generous sum of a pint or two! :beerchug:
