I have recently acquired a knocking on my 2.8 Quattro 1999 which sounds a bit like a loose exhaust bracket when i go over bumps in the road. I got under neath last week expecting to see something loose or hanging off but no joy.

It appears to stop if i drive with the brake/handbrake slightly applied but does not sound like pads.

Any ideas?

Is the noise coming from the near side, off side or the middle?

If it is coming from one of the sides, I believe there is something called a drop link, that maybe causing the knocking noise which you are experiencing.

The rear ARB runs very close to the exhaust on my car, as it's lowered the arb is lower than normal, and plus i've got an after market system which is 1/2 inch bigger which doesn't help but if the exhaust mount drops it will hit it, Best bet is when cold get under and shake the exhaust, and listen for any knocking, that'll tell u if it's the exhaust mounts.

Thanks for your replies guys I will have to investiage again this weekend.

Alex

Did you get any closer to finding out what this was? Mine started doing it today without any warning. Had the rear pads changed a week or so ago, but I'm not convinced this is where the noise is coming from. It does sound like the exhaust knocking on something, although when I wiggled the exhaust (from the back box) it didn't knock at all :uhm:

Found out what it was. The useless cowboys as the local indy hadn't tightened the drivers side rear calliper properly and it had become detatched from the car! By **** am I angry! :nunu:

Now I remember why I have a garage full of tools and do it all myself... :)
