Yesterday while looking at my car, I got an idea...

Could it be possible to combine optics and standard grille in a way that the grille itself (those vertical stripes) would be standard - chromed, and the grille surround would be from the optics package - glossy black...

Any ideas? Pics?

:sign_pics:

IIRC someone on here has dismantled their grille, removed the frame and painted. So yes I think it is possible.

Do a search on here under grille, optics grille, S3 grille. I'm sure you'll be able to find it.

Like this black optic pack with chrome fittings from std grill.Thread on here somewhere. Spray surround any colour you want

yeah that was only in the last week or so aswell if IIRC, images up aswell I think.

Yep, searched, but haven't found what I'm looking for :)

This is the idea, this original black optics surround from Audi,

Combined with everything else as it is on this car :)

JonnyC's old S3 (have a search) had the standard platinum coloured inserts with the Black opitc's surround and strips.

Heres what I did with mine, as Jamie said.. Optics down tubes and surround with the standard platinun grill..

Different to anything else I have seen anyways..

If you are using a std S3 optic grill and are going to put all the chrome strips, surround etc from a std S3 grill thats what I did, your first pic looks like a S line optic grill, dont think you could fit the chrome S3 bits to a S line grill

10Blazin done this

He took the surround off, painted it black and left the inside the standard grey colour to match his car.

I currently have an S-Line grille, but would like to buy an S3 grille with S3 optics surround if that is possible, that's why i started the thread - to find out if it is possible and maybe get some pics... :)

I wouldn't want to paint anything if it's not reeealy neccesary...

I think you are looking to do the reverse of this?

In which case, it is possible :)

Exactly m8, though what you have there is also very good, love that combo! Any more pics?

So, how did you do it? Can the grill an the surround be sold seperatly? thnx

If you fit an S3 grill in place of an Sline grill IIRC you'll get a gap of about 5 mm at the bottom.

IIRC the grills are of the same size on the new 2009 FL A3/S3's...

Thanks for the links evapor8!

Indeed, see the pic of my car above - no gap. It's a straight swap, all the screw holes on the S3 grille match up to the original. It's a 10 minute job to swap once you have the bumper off, no messing about with clips like the pre-facelift.

The grille is screwed to the bumper on the FL.

I think the optics frame is available seperately, I will check ETKA later.

yeah i did it looked good i though but the misses wanted the grill black so .... off with the grill again its now all black looks good il post pics later

I'll get involved on this one, as I'm not sure the standard black S-Line grill that will come on my new car is exactly what I want.

Is the S3 badge clipped onto the S3 grill, or attached more securely? I'm trying to work out how easy it will be to change to an S-Line badge if I change the grill.

The S3 badge is clipped in, the S-line badge is not a direct fit. I machined an adapter to convert the slot on the S3 grille to accept the S-line badge.

I suppose it could just be glued on but I wanted to do a proper job and also ensure it wasn't easily stolen!

Cheers Sem. So I could leave the badge off entirely and it wouldn't leave any obvious gap?

Chris

Unfortunately not, there is a rectangular hole which the S3 badge clips into so you would need another badge to fill it.

There is also a gap in the vertical chrome strip.
