Hi,

Been stalking the forum for a while now so i thought i'd sign up now as i'm pretty sure I want to go for the S3!

There is a couple of things that worry me slightly, the first of which is the 'dull drive' many reviews comment on. I've not had a performance car before so maybe ignorance is bliss but it seems to come up really quite often as a topic round here.

The second was the running costs, mainly the MPG.
Audi figures say about 33 mpg combinded which i'd be happy with but i've seen people mention 21 mpg .
Just wondering what you guys get on average and what sort of driving you do.

I'm really excited about the car, One on autotrader with buckets, DVD nav etc in Black for £18k 07 plate I think.

One on pistonheads for £12700. probably a cat d though.

Anyway, any help would be very much appriciated.

IMO your looking at ones right at the bottom end of the market which in my experience tend to be scruffy. My advice would be to spend a touch more and maybe even sacrifice the seats to get a nice clean example.

There are more fun cars out there , do they have Audi class build? no , not at this price point with four seats!

You need to decide what you want/need from the car.

22mpg around town seems to be the norm

The handling of the S3 is very neutral, but with the power it is anything but dull.

I think clinical is the accusation thrown at the s3 and its not wrong. Personally when i boot it I want all of the power to go down and predictable handling which is pretty much what you get. Whether that's a good or bad thing is down to taste. You will only find out by getting a test drive if you like it. The interior feels a bit special even after a couple of months.

MPG varies. Mine is 2k on the clock and I get:-

24-6mpg with reasonable driving (occasionaly bursts of fun)
low 20's when its push hard for long periods

on long journeys you will probably get 28mpg max if you can control yourself. town driving is expensive, but so are most fun things.

Thanks guys.

The main things are its has excellent build quality, fast and fun to drive.
So i think the S3 is the right one.

Think the market for the pre face lift 07's seems to be all under £20k and the ones that are selling are £18k and the rest just sit there for months from what i've seen.

Glasses guide showing a drop of over £500 per month at the moment!

its a great time to be buying. it may get better if your are patient.

i woudl go to a dealer and suggest a 'deal' which makes him feel like hes been bummed by an elephant :crying:

And If you have an elephant handy.. Its just that a bit of extra bargaining power goes a long way :)

I went to my local dealer and they showed very little interest in me and didn't seem to understand I wanted to have a deal and was more interested in trying to sell me GAP insurance.

Will try this once i have the right one in my sights though.
I feel i would be in a stronger position to haggle over the phone tbh.

It would be interesting to see what the dealers are offering for them in part ex at the moment.

Fuel economy is worse than i thought but like you said, anything fun comes at a cost. Only other alternative was the R32 but the quality isn't quite there and from what i've heard they're worse on fuel.

Not much worse on fuel, road tax is a bit more steep though

I've had to sell her recently to raise funds for the car. And my right arm :)

Take this one to the showroom

This one was a scam. Wanted me to go to an address in manchester with cash. He was using pictures of an s3 from ebay.

Pretty much what I was expecting but worth a look.

Me too, I showed my Gf the picture, chortling, she just looked at me funny

I am on my 4th budweiser tho... Its been a ****, hard, hard, slog, bitch of a week.

Even David Bowie is disappointed for laughing.

no mate, been laughing at this since 1st input, lmfao, personally I thought the collaboration on the elephant poking thing was best, lol, but gotta hand it to L60N like his insurance gig, lol

Best one I've seen on the site to date has to be the road cutting machine that someone turned into a robot, ah man that has me peeing myself even now, just brilliant from start to finish.

Think your about right with the prices. Was looking at selling mine, been following a few on Pistonheads gauging the market ....... I'd be amazed if i had an offer in the low twenties, 20K I would consider good and 18k seems to be coming the norm.

If it's your first performace car then i think it may well put a smile on your face.

Don't be shy, ask if anyone is local with an S3 to take you out on a spirited drive.

As the prices are moving so quickly I want to get the best deal I can.

Saw a black S3 pull up behind me at the petrol station the other day and had to fight back the urge to ask the owner about it!
Anyone in the Bath area with an s3?

I just left my job at a Renault dealership so I use to drive the 197 and r26 230 a bit and was so impressed by the handling of both I just think the audi has to be miles ahead with the quattro as well.
Just need to make sure before commiting to it.

The Renaults will handle better than the S3 ( not by much mind ) and be more fun , they have a fantastic chassis on the sport Renaults.

The S3 has the class and the build over them , and if tunning your things you can get good power from the Audi for £1000 , the R26 seems to stop at 270bhp.

I would have thought a £27k audi with 4wd might handle better and be more fun than the Renaults! I used 3/4 of a tank in the r26 in one night as it was so addictive.

Probably stop after a remap and an exhaust system so tuning isn't the main thing for me.

Such a tough choice when your spending this amount of money.
