I am looking at an S3 this weekend. It has been remapped to 265bhp.

What risks does a remap of a 1999 S3 incure, assuming 210bhp stock?

Are there any specific issues with S3s that may need to be considered if the car has done 80k miles?

Believe it has full Audi history up to the last serivce which was carried out independently.

Thanks

80K is nothing if it's been regularly serviced. Cam belt is the main consideration. Just do the usual check for weird noises and rattles, oil burning etc.

Upped power can cause issue with the standard DV, clutch and coil packs. Saying that it's a lottery as many cars don't have a problem and some have them on standard power. So if the clutch isn't slipping, it holds boost and the DV doesn't flutter then great.

Do a search as this should have been covered in other posts.

I think the 265bhp figure is high unless its had more than a plug and play remap,I'm only saying this as I have been to a few rolling road days and have not seen one which achieved close to it.
BTW welcome Steve

1999 S3 is indeed 210BHP, it will be the APY engine with the bigger gudeon(sp?) pins, so a stronger engine in the first place. As HTC mentioned already, so long as the Cambelt is done, then it should be pretty safe, usual wear and tear of the DV and MAF sensors apply to all VAG 1.8T's so the risk is the same whatever car you buy in my opinion.

As others have said cambelt (and water pump) should have been changed at some point. If it was done on schedule in 2004 it may be required next year (£350 cost approx). I have found with my S3 that the anti-roll bar bushes last about 40K so if these have been replaced at some point, may need doing so again soon. Look out for creaks in the suspension which normally points to these. Most reckon standard internals are OK to over 300bhp so I wouldn't worry at all about the re-map (my 210 was remapped to 265bhp 4 years ago and has never missed a beat).

has anyone actually broken one of the smaller gudeon pins on the BAM engine?? just wondered cos a lot of the pre facelift people slate the BAM for this yet never heard of them breaking

It only really comes into effect if your looking for monster power, i've never heard any complaints athough have been told from 2 different companies (Awesome and the old AMD in bicester) that the AUM is the unit to start with if this is your goal....otherwise it doesn't matter, i don't loose no sleep over it put it that way...

AUM? the AUM hasnthe smaller 19mm gudgeon pins just like the AMK and the BAM though, as well as the small port head!

The agu is the one with the 20mm gudgeon pins and large port head.

Doh...Cheers prawn, get them confused every time.....

AGU 20mm....AGU 20mm....AGU 20mm....

cheers Leggy..... has anyone known them to break on big turbo kits? or is this a precaution that has expanded for no particular reason...just seems odd that Audi would de-engineer a car on a facelift model, obviously they dont consider future BT upgrades but even still, re-engineering a pin to save money? there has to be a reason for it

Whats wrong have you found a cheap big turbo on ebay or something? lol

how do you know if there is DV flutter?

When you talk about holding boost are you referring to a smooth delivery of power once the turbo kicks in?

yup, i plan to buy but only after getting one of those resistors that give you an extra15 bhp:icon_thumright:

just wondered as everytime its raised im left wondering why it really matters? if the bigger pins were like using a sledge hammer to knock a panel pin in then really it isnt necessarily a benefit in having them - more of a 'you have them' but to no benefit

you know what im like when i get a bee in my bonnet:)

Lower the windows and listen for a flutter when you give it the beans then let off the power. It should make a very quiet whooshing noise, with no flutter.
